As we finish up our second week of classes and activities, it’s important to acknowledge the challenges we’ve faced and some are still facing! Today marks one week when tornadoes ripped through our city and academic institutions leaving behind significant damage. Efforts to clean up are in progress, though some remain without electricity. Despite these setbacks, we’ve successfully kept most classes on track. Unfortunately, two tours had to be postponed due to the weather conditions (Hopkins Electric Station and WCTV (both who were quite busy at the time!!), but we’re optimistic about rescheduling them. Through it all, we’ve found relief in nostalgia with Yogi Bear and friends, expanded our knowledge of football terminology, enjoyed the humor of the Marx Brothers, and even managed to tidy up our digital spaces (internet access permitting). We’re looking forward to the upcoming week, better weather and the new experiences OLLI brings!

Every May, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads the nation’s observance of Older Americans Month. This year’s theme is “Powered by Connection,” an opportunity for us to explore the many ways we can remain in and be involved in our communities as we age. Corinne Stillwell (FSU Professor and past OLLL Instructor and this fall too!) is inviting everyone to the upcoming Music For Food concert entitled, “Happy Shoes.” The performance will be on Sunday, May 19 at 4pm at Grace Lutheran Church, 2919 Miccosukee Road. This program features one of Franz Schubert’s most beloved songs, the beautiful “Shepherd on the Rock,” for soprano, clarinet, and piano. Next is the Folk Suite for violin and harp, written in 2008 by Taiwanese composer Chiayu Hsu. It is an evocative work that portrays scenes from the 3 main ethnic groups in Taiwan. The program closes with the sunny and delightful Piano Quartet by Robert Schumann. We hope you can join us for this wonderful repertoire, and to find out why our program is called, “Happy Shoes!”

Our stellar cast of performers includes soprano Marcy Stonikas, clarinetist Deborah Bish, pianist Dean Peiskee, violinist Ben Sung, harpist Noël Wan, violinist Corinne Stillwell, violist Laurel Yu, cellist Mitchell George, and pianist Deloise Lima.

Music For Food is a musician-led initiative to fight hunger in our community, and we're part of a national organization with 22 chapters across the country. Our concert is free but we'll be collecting non-perishable food and monetary donations to benefit the FSU Food for Thought Pantry. Donations may also be made online at https://musicforfood.net/donate. Suggested donation is $20/adult, $5/student, and non-perishable food donations are welcomed.
We sincerely hope you'll join us to celebrate spring with an afternoon of music to nourish our souls, and food to nourish our community. Please share this email to spread the word, and we'll look forward to seeing you there!
