The Florida A&M University College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities salutes the life and legacy of Dr. Aubrey Perry, Dean Emeritus of the former College of Arts and Sciences, whose extraordinary leadership, scholarship, and unwavering commitment to academic excellence helped shape generations of Rattlers. A clinical psychologist, he was a guiding light instrumental in helping the university advance the principles and significance of the social sciences, arts and humanities.

We honor the impact of this esteemed university administrator, distinguished scholar, and respected academic and community leader, whose impact on FAMU will continue to be felt through the students, faculty, and academic community he inspired. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former colleagues, students, and all who were blessed by his life and service. Rest well, Dean Perry. During a surprise tribute on July 9, the FAMU College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities (CSSAH) honored the contribution, impact and continuing legacy of Dr. Valencia E. Matthews, founder of the Irene C. Edmonds Youth Theatre Camp. The tribute was part of the 30th Anniversary and final season of ICE Camp. A distinguished educator, dedicated advocate for The Arts and dean of CSSAH, Matthews is known as a humble, servant leader whose career reflects a deep commitment to service, culture, and academic excellence. A native of Lane, South Carolina, she credits her rural upbringing and the values instilled by family, church, and community for shaping her passion for education and the arts.

Matthews established ICE Camp in 1997 to honor the legacy of pioneering children’s theatre educator Prof. Irene C. Edmonds, who in 1948, founded the nationally recognized FAMU Creative Children's Theatre. Under Matthews' leadership, ICE Camp became known for its profound impact on the lives of children and high-quality theatrical productions. As part of the special tribute, a portrait of Matthews was unveiled on CSSAH’s Wall of Visionary Leaders. After establishing the first children’s theatre at a historically Black college or university at Dillard University in 1935, Prof. Irene C. Edmonds brought her expertise to Florida A&M University, where she organized and directed the nationally recognized FAMU Creative Children’s Theatre from 1948 to 1960. Her work helped establish theatre as an educational tool for children and young people nationwide. Inspired by Edmonds’ legacy, Dr. Valencia Matthews revived children’s theatre at FAMU in 1997 by founding the Irene C. Edmonds Youth Theatre Camp. Under her leadership, ICE Camp, a 5-week summer program, became known for producing quality theatrical performances while helping young people build confidence, creativity, leadership skills and lifelong friendships.
