Charlie Ouimet, who taught with distinction for nearly 40 years at Florida State, including nearly two decades in the Department of Biomedical Sciences with the College of Medicine, died May 2 at the age of 76 from metastatic cancer.
Obituary: https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/name/charles-ouimet-obituary?id=51790928
His sharp wit, unmistakable enthusiasm, and ability to inspire students led him to receive 21 teaching awards at FSU, including the universityโs highest honor: the Distinguished Teaching Award. He won the top teaching award in the Program in Medical Sciences nine times in 10 years during the 1990s before his name was permanently added to it before the College of Medicineโs first class arrived in 2001.
As the third faculty member hired for the nationโs newest medical school, Ouimet joked that he really wanted to be seventh: โThen I could have called myself 007," he said.
To gain a better appreciation of his humor and love of students, read the commencement speech he gave to the College of Medicine M.D. Class of 2012: https://med.fsu.edu/spotlight/home/graduation-day-class-2012/tue-10232018-1752
Better yet, listen to his unparalleled delivery in this video:

The Department of Biomedical Sciences is developing a scholarship fund in his honor. Check med.fsu.edu soon for more about that and Ouimetโs life and impact.
