From playing basketball at Columbia Union College to giving back through Washington Adventist University, Steve Francis is bringing his connection to Takoma Park full circle.

The three-time NBA All-Star has partnered with WAU to launch the Steve Francis Scholarship Fund, honoring his mother’s legacy and helping students pursue higher education.

“This is only the beginning,” Francis said.

From WAU to the White Coat!

Washington Adventist University is proud to celebrate Omonigho “Omo” Michelle Oziegbe ’23, who recently received her white coat at the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine!

A WAU graduate with a degree in biology and minors in chemistry and honors interdisciplinary studies, Omo is now pursuing her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree as a member of Temple’s Class of 2028.

Her journey into podiatric medicine is deeply personal. Born with a congenital foot condition, Omo’s early curiosity about the foot and ankle eventually grew into a passion for medicine, surgery and compassionate patient care.

Today, she is excelling academically while serving in numerous leadership and service roles, continuing a commitment to serving others that she says was strengthened during her time at WAU.

“Washington Adventist University prepared me well for my career in podiatry and instilled in me the importance of service to others,” Omo said. “Through all of my experiences, my faith in God has been strengthened as he guides me on my journey as a future physician.”

Congratulations, Omo! Your WAU family is proud of you and excited to see where your journey of faith, learning and service takes you next.

Following our statement yesterday, September 11, 2026, regarding the tragic loss of two Washington Adventist University (WAU) students in a motor vehicle accident near Bridgeville, Delaware, we are now able to identify our students as Jeremy Lopez and Michelle Reyes.

Jeremy was a sophomore studying voice performance and theology who shared his remarkable joy and musical gifts through WAU's ProMusica Choir and a member of a quartet. Michelle was a senior studying psychology and behavioral science and a dedicated member of our cross-country team.

Our hearts and prayers remain with the Lopez and Reyes families, their classmates, teammates, professors, friends and everyone who loved them. These young people were extremely loved and valued members of the WAU family, and their loss is being felt deeply throughout our campus community.

As a University community, our focus is on remembering Jeremy and Michelle, supporting their families and caring for one another during this extraordinarily difficult time. Counseling and pastoral support are being made available to our community as we grieve together, celebrate their enduring impact on our lives and seek God’s comfort and strength.

The accident remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police, and the University will defer questions concerning the circumstances of the accident to the appropriate law enforcement authorities.

Information regarding opportunities for the WAU family and the wider community to gather in remembrance, tribute and prayer will be shared as details become available.

We ask our alumni, friends, partners and broader community to continue to keep the Lopez and Reyes families, their friends and the entire WAU community in prayer.

TAKOMA PARK, MD — It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that Washington Adventist University (WAU) confirms the passing of two members of our student community following a tragic motor vehicle accident.

The loss of these young lives is deeply felt across our University community. Our students are at the heart of who we are, and the passing of two members of the WAU family is a devastating loss for their families, friends, classmates, faculty, staff and all who knew and loved them.

The names of the students are being withheld at this time until full approval for their release has been granted by the families affected. We ask that their privacy be respected as they grieve this unimaginable loss.

TAKOMA PARK, MD — Washington Adventist University (WAU) is informing the campus community and general public of an incident involving a downed power line near Halcyon Hall, the University’s female residence hall.

The downed line remained electrically active for a period of time and resulted in damage to a couple vehicles in the immediate area.

Most importantly, there were no injuries, and all students, employees and members of the campus community are safe. The affected area has been secured, and the situation is now contained.
