TAKOMA PARK, Md. — Washington Adventist University (WAU) has approved a significant organizational restructuring designed to strengthen the University's external engagement, institutional communications, alumni relations, and advancement efforts. The University's Cabinet has approved the merger of the Integrated Marketing & Communications (IMC) Department with the Advancement & Alumni Relations Department to establish a new University Relations sector. This newly created University Relations sector reflects a strategic shift that aligns WAU with organizational models commonly used across higher education.

As part of the restructuring, Mr. Everett Wiles who currently serves as the Vice President for Integrated Marketing & Communication will now serve as the Vice President for University Relations, providing executive leadership for the University's communications, branding, media relations, community engagement, government and church relations, alumni engagement, and advancement initiatives. Ms. Karine Brown who was recently appointed Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations, will now report to the Vice President and will lead efforts to strengthen alumni engagement, donor stewardship, fundraising initiatives, and external partnerships.

Washington Adventist University (WAU) is pleased to announce the appointment of Karine Brown as its new Director of Advancement & Alumni Relations, effective July 27, 2026. Brown brings more than a decade of leadership experience in higher education administration, executive operations, institutional governance, and strategic project management to this important role.

Brown has served Washington Adventist University since 2023 in key leadership positions that have supported the institution’s strategic priorities and executive operations. She first served as Director of Distinctive University Operations, where she provided strategic oversight for presidential initiatives, institutional projects, and board operations. Most recently, she served as Senior Executive Assistant to the President, partnering closely with executive leadership while helping advance institutional effectiveness, alumni engagement, and advancement initiatives.

In her new role, Brown will provide leadership for the University’s advancement and alumni relations efforts, strengthening relationships with alumni, donors, friends, churches, and community partners while helping cultivate philanthropic support that advances Washington Adventist University’s mission and trategic priorities. Her experience in executive leadership, governance, and relationship management positions her to help expand the University’s culture of engagement and stewardship.

Academically, Brown holds a Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in Human Resources and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance from Northern Caribbean University. She is currently pursuing a Master of Healthcare Administration at Washington Adventist University, further strengthening her expertise in leadership and organizational management.

Washington Adventist University (WAU) was honored to welcome Maryland Lt. Governor Aruna K. Miller to campus as the keynote speaker for the closing ceremony of the UNESCO Center for Peace Summer Camp 2026, held at the Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church on the university campus. The international event brought together approximately 150 high school and university students representing 15 countries to celebrate leadership, global citizenship, and intercultural collaboration.

Lt. Governor Miller delivered the keynote address during the closing ceremony, encouraging students to embrace leadership through service, education, and collaboration. Her remarks emphasized the importance of preparing the next generation of leaders to foster peace, innovation, and international understanding while recognizing Maryland’s role as a diverse and globally connected state.

Washington Adventist University Interim President Dr. Cheryl Harris Kisunzu welcomed the lieutenant governor to the university and expressed appreciation for her commitment to education, public service, and youth development. As a symbol of gratitude and hospitality, Dr. Kisunzu presented Lt. Governor Miller with a Certificate of Welcome on behalf of the university, commemorating her first official visit to the WAU campus and recognizing her participation in the international gathering.
