I came across this article by way of a link from the Economist's View website. It's an essay by an American teacher--winner of the Fulbright Distinguished Award in Teaching--writing on her experience teaching in American schools and comparing it with time spent in Finnish schools. The essay written three years ago still makes for very fascinating and instructive reading http://oecdinsights.org/2013/09/23/us-teacher-gets-finnish-lesson-in-optimizing-student-potential/.

There's an interesting little story at the end of Luke chapter two about when Mary and Joseph took Jesus to Jerusalem for Passover when He was twelve years old. After the festival was over, they left to go home, supposing He was with them.

I wonder how many times we suppose God's with us when we've wandered off to do our own thing?

Now here's the interesting part. Mary and Joseph had traveled a day's journey before they realized Jesus wasn't with them and then it took three days to find Him. Three days! The message here is that it's easier to lose that special presence of God than it is to get it back once we've lost it.

On Friday our nation experienced a tragedy that is incomprehensible and yet as the authorities investigate to try and come up with an explanation as to why this happened many others have speculated as to the reasons for such an act.

I would like to share my thoughts.

First – The violent video games that have become commonplace have desensitized us to the point that practicing killing in the games is not only practiced but glorified. Second - the media devotes so much attention to these crazed killers that they become household names. Individuals who are mentally unbalanced see this as a way to become famous.

Some may say gun control is the answer, however, I’ve never seen a gun kill somebody without a triggerman. No, it is the person pulling the trigger that is the danger.

In my opinion this is what happens when a nation turns from God fearing Biblical principles.

We will continue to pray for the families that have lost loved ones but lets also continue to pray for the Holy Spirit to strengthen us to have the courage to tell others about the peace and belonging that comes from knowing a loving and forgiving Savior.
