Common Ground on the Hill's Traditions Week is coming up July 5-10, 2026. It's an amazing music and arts camp with workshops in traditional roots-based music, visual arts, and dance, as well as creative writing, film, discussion classes, yoga and more! Cellist and SMT teacher Ellen Gira will be among an impressive faculty including Tim O'Brien, Alice Gerrard and Tatiana Hargreaves.

Takoma Porch Fest was a blast! We hosted performances by student bands from our ensemble programs and closed the day with an open jam. If you missed it don't fret, the Takoma Park Bluegrass Block Party is May 15th from 5-7pm on Laurel Ave!

Hey friends! This is such a wonderful class. Jonathan Vocke is an incredible teacher and wonderful community builder. Getting involved in a folk genre is akin to learning a new language and gaining a new nationwide/sometimes global community.

If you learn enough old time songs you can travel the country and be a part of Old Time Jams - knowing the same songs. SMT’s structure of offering a low cost, low commitment once a month sample class- to see if this is the right genre for you - is such a gift! Thanks to David Eisner for setting up such a fabulous school!
