I AM SEEING THE RESULTS OF A CLOSED MEXICO BORDER FOR THE EXPORTATION OF HORSES TO SLAUGHTER
I cheered when the USDA shut down the border to Mexico.
It felt like victory.
Now if we can just get Canada to shut its doors!
That was my gleeful hope and thought.
And then I drove up to the main supplier of horses to the Canadian plant in Quebec….
And what I saw horrified me.
Cody, the owners son, approached me upon arrival rather frazzled. He said every dealer in the country with the exception of Texas and New Mexico (where transport is banned for Canadian slaughter) wants to sell him a load of horses to ship.
He said point blank he doesn’t even need to go to sales any more.
Someone dropped off 40 horses yesterday.
FORTY!
They are driving them direct to his door step.
And the Quebec plant wants every last one. Mexico isn’t getting its USA supply of horses.
Canada is all too glad to supply the missing poundage.
Three loads left last week. That’s 80+ horses.
This week six will go. That’s 150+ horses.
Next week? A planned six or seven.
The border didn’t shut down… not really.
The cards just shuffled and the game changed. The location of exportation changed from Mexico to Canada.
Now they’re being sent north.
Experiencing long transports in hot weather, a few days of holding in overcrowded pens and sent over the border.
Slaughter got crueler.
Mexico didn’t require drug testing, and now Canada offering more money for horses who aren’t tested. It’s still worth it to send them tested BUT ones with positive tests are still going on separate loads for cheaper payouts.
CCR cannot stop every load from going.
It’s no longer clearing the pen.
It’s saving the ones we can.
I don’t care if you don’t like us.
I don’t care if…
You Don’t believe in what we’re doing.
You Support horse slaughter when we don’t.
This isn’t right.
A closed border without any safety nets in place just meant more horses shipping.
Rescues weren’t ready to unexpectedly absolve the .36%.
I thought we were…
There’s some ego in thinking we can just handle it all, isn’t there?
I’ve been humbled staring at this pen full of unwanted horses.
I always have a plan. A next step. A chess move to make sure we save them all.
I don’t see a clear pattern on this board. I don’t see a move to make beyond taking the first step of sliding a pawn forward.
By asking you to donate just $1. So many people have commented that they can’t donate this time… and I understand.
But I implore you.
Check the couch cushions. Check the car for spare change.
Just $1.
From all 2.2 million of you.
This isn’t some over exaggerated attempt to raise funds.
This is REAL.
This is the result of a closed border.
These horses WILL lose their lives for human consumption.
Please share.
Please donate.
Our American horses need us.
More than ever before.
