Learning to sail is more than completing a single class. It’s a progression—building skills, confidence, judgment, and experience one step at a time.
At Puget Sound Sailing Institute, the journey begins with ASA 101 and continues through ASA 103 and ASA 104, preparing you to move from learning the basics to confidently cruising on your own.
🔹 𝗔𝗦𝗔 𝟭𝟬𝟭 — 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗯𝗼𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴
This is where it starts. Learn the fundamentals of sailing, including sail trim, points of sail, tacking, jibing, basic navigation, safety procedures, crew communication, and boat handling.
You’re learning how to sail the boat.
🔹 𝗔𝗦𝗔 𝟭𝟬𝟯 — 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴
Now you begin taking those foundational skills further. You’ll develop stronger boat-handling skills while learning anchoring, docking, navigation, weather awareness, seamanship, emergency procedures, and the responsibilities involved in operating a cruising sailboat.
You’re learning how to manage the boat.
🔹 𝗔𝗦𝗔 𝟭𝟬𝟰 — 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴
This is where everything begins coming together. ASA 104 prepares sailors for multi-day cruising aboard larger sailboats, including passage planning, boat systems, provisioning, navigation, anchoring, docking, crew management, emergency preparation, and living aboard.
You’re learning how to command the cruise.

During the checkout, members work through key skills including:
