Please join WAFLT in supporting the German program at Bellingham High School. Students deserve a variety of language course options that offer at least four years of instruction.

and WAFLT Board Member, Dr. Susanne Rinner.

We send our support to BHS German teacher, Liam Weydert and all language educators who face program challenges.

WAFLT's 2025-26 Teacher of the Year, Mary Ho**er (Sehome HS, Bellingham) is a featured guest on the Immediate Immersion podcast!

Back-to-school over-planning — in this episode of Comprehend THIS!, we get into why every August our planning brain overshoots into color-coded systems we abandon by week three. You'll walk away with a saner standard for how much to actually prep before day one, and permission to stop rebuilding units that were already fine.

We talk through the guilt of reusing last year's materials, the over-engineered systems that fall apart by October, and what "good enough and sustainable" really looks like when you're setting up for a new year.

I'm joined by Pamela Parks — a former professional translator who now teaches world language — and guest Mary Ho**er, wrapping up her 33rd year teaching Spanish and Teacher Academy at Sehome High in Bellingham, a 2025 WAFLT Teacher of the Year, and a SOMOS teacher who happily admits she's never reused a lesson plan without major tweaks. So this back-to-school planning conversation is part support group, part intervention, and fully honest about how much prep is actually sustainable for a language teacher heading into a new year.
