We loved welcoming a PSJSTEM alum back to campus to talk with our 8th graders about life at Bellarmine! She shared what to expect in high school, how to prepare, and what has helped her be successful along the way.

In religion, 4th grade has studied John 3:16 and what it means to be grateful for the gifts God gives us. They took the time to draw and write down someone in their life for whom they are grateful. After Thursday Mass, as a class, 4th grade stayed in the chapel to offer up prayers for their person in a special prayer of Thanksgiving. They then asked so many wonderful questions about the different Holy objects they saw used in Mass.

First grade has been learning all about the patterns of the sun, moon, and stars! Our Firsties have made sundials to track the sun’s patterns, created models of the moon’s phases, explored stars and constellations, and learned about UV rays. They even made magic bead bracelets to help detect UV rays! Using the scientific inquiry process, students tested heat, light, and sunlight to see when their beads changed color. They were amazed to see the beads change in sunlight and learned that UV rays are present even when we cannot see them. They are also exploring how their shadows change throughout the day based on the sun’s position and making connections between sunlight, shadows, and UV rays. What a bright and exciting STEM unit! Up next, designing playgrounds to protect students from UV rays.

After learning about the shape of light waves and visible light- they made predictions about what happens when you combine light waves of different colors. Some surprising discoveries were found when they mixed all three primary colors of light!

Kindergarten finished their science unit on Animals’ Needs! Students learned that all animals need food, water, shelter, and protection to survive. To put their learning into action, students painted birdhouses to provide shelter for birds. Great job, Kindergarten!

On the 25th anniversary, we remembered September 11, 2001, and the many heroes who showed courage, compassion, and selflessness during a difficult time in our nation’s history.

Our 4th graders read, “He Said Yes,” the story of Father Mychal Judge, and learned about his courage and service to others. Our 1st graders read, “This Very Tree,” a story of resilience and hope following 9/11.
Both classes discussed what it means to be a hero and reflected on how we can continue to be heroes to others through kindness, courage, service, and compassion.
