At CWA, students have many opportunities and the encouragement to try new things so they can discover their passions. Middle Schoolers can choose from a host of new elective offerings this year.

Yesterday, Middle Schoolers presented their final electives projects at the Fall Electives Showcase event for friends and family to enjoy.

Tarriers demonstrated their skills to families including Ainsley L. ’29 who created a printmaking design by hand to showcase her parents’ wedding anniversary. Families also helped assist with the creation of halloween costumes that they will wear for the upcoming annual Fall Festival event.

Join us this evening at 6:30 p.m. for the first speaker in the Equity & Inclusion Virtual Speaker Series. Here’s a link to register https://bit.ly/3TjgeU8

This speaker series is a program led by a number of local independent schools, including CWA, to offer communities the opportunity to connect, learn, and engage in topics surrounding equity, inclusion, antiracist education, but most importantly, action. We hope you can tune in for Tiffany Jewell’s presentation on “The Anti-Racist Kid: Identity, Justice, and Activism” tonight at 6:30 p.m.
Kindergartners took their first field trip of the year to The Curran Apple Orchard Park as part of their yearlong hands-on study of apples!

Children explored the orchard by participating in a scavenger hunt, observing the seasonal changes and lifecycle stages of trees, and discovering the many ways apples are used. Earlier in the week, Tarriers made applesauce from a variety of 18 different apples! From slicing, stirring, cooking, and mashing, children created delicious, homemade applesauce for all to enjoy!

Sixth graders had a thrill of a ride when they were aboard the Adventuress–a historical tall ship that resides in the Puget Sound.

While spending their day overlooking the Puget Sound, students came to be sailors, learning how to control the ship's rigging and the local ecosystem.

Tarriers had a fun time with engaging, hands-on activities that covered various topics, including plankton, life aboard the ship, marine debris, nautical skills, ocean acidification, and more!

Our youngest students are naturally curious and creative, which is why we give them plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning. They are discovering and imagining what they can do with everyday objects.

Atelierista Avery Wittstruck knows how to make play and save the environment at the same time by using loose parts from ZeroLandfill Seattle. Teacher Avery says, "Not only did these unique materials provide children with hours of play, they were also rescued from the landfill."

Way to go, Beginning Schoolers!

Mrs. Dales’s 5th grade students have been practicing their storytelling and communication skills by becoming podcasters!

Tarriers have planned, recorded, and edited their own podcasts and are happy with the work they have produced in class. Levi S. '30 said, “Recording a podcast was a little intimidating at first, but then I was proud of my work. Next time, I'll be more prepared and confident.”

Podcasting empowers students to share stories, interests, and knowledge to others to authentically express themselves.

Keep up the great work, Tarriers!

Charles Wright educators believe in the importance of lifelong learning.

While students enjoy a sunny day off, more than 800 educators and leaders came together to participate in professional development as CWA hosts this year’s Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS) Fall Educators Conference.

All Charles Wright faculty are attending the regional independent school conference, however, a cohort of thirteen CWA educators will give presentations to their peers including DuChanté Davis, Rixa Evershed, Sam Harris, Christine Jones, David Kangas, Jon Lamoreux, Gabrielle Plastrik, Deanne Trummert, Nikki FastLee, Christopher Hoppin, Jon Flies, Suzy E***o, and Jenn Kolbo.

Faculty look forward to strengthening their craft through learning, growth, and development to benefit their students.
Tarriers in seventh grade recently returned from an overnight exploration at Mount St Helens Institute.

Middle School faculty members Christopher Hoppin, DuChanté Davis, Nikki FastLee, Susanne Everill, along with Middle School Director Rachel Rippl accompanied seventh graders on an adventure to better understand the safekeeping and stewardship of the earth through science, education, and exploration.

Throughout this experiential education trip, students had the great opportunity to participate in an array of engaging activities, learning about the natural landscapes, and creating memories along the way.

Tarriers already can’t wait for their next experiential education field trip!

Congratulations to Jerry Chiang ’01 who is now the second CWA alum to be named a 40-Under-40 honoree by Puget Sound Business Journal.

When asked for advice to future Tarriers, Jerry responded, “Enjoy your time at CWA, take advantage of the amazing faculty, and leverage their rich life experience to help you explore your interests.” He continued, “Cultivate your passions in life, and with hard work and some luck, you may be able to turn one of your passions into your profession and career.”

Jerry is the General Counsel at DistroKid, an independent music distribution firm making it easy for music creators to get their music into digital music services like Spotify, Apple Music, TikTok, Instagram, and more. Prior to DistroKid, Jerry began his legal practice in the music industry by working for Jimi Hendrix’s family company and then built his practice at the intersection of technology and IP rights at companies like Amazon, Apple, and Rhapsody International.

We’re so proud of this accomplishment of our fellow Tarrier!

Tarriers in Lower School are exploring and creating a variety of different art forms through after school enrichment.

Rainbow Parrot Art is one of CWA’s newest enrichment programs this year and continues to encourage Tarriers to embrace their artistic abilities. Led by local artist, Lacey Reuter, the program encourages students to practice their creativity and share their hard work with families to enjoy.

Just recently, children have been painting colorful peacocks, using every color in the rainbow in each painting!

Middle School students are buzzing with excitement as they discover their passions through new fall electives.

Lily V. ’29 and Emma F. ’29 recently made strawberry puff pastry in Ms. Mahoney’s cooking class. In Ms. Everill’s sewing class in the Tech Lab, Archie E. ’29 and Levi B. ’29 have designed and created custom hand puppets. Students made sushi and other asian cuisine dishes in the Japanese cooking class led by Alia Sensei.

Middle School Librarian Susanne Everill says, “The students are so proud of the projects they've been making to practice basic machine sewing skills. It's been really fun to watch their skills and confidence grow.” Tarriers in the sewing elective will soon make Halloween costumes and accessories, ranging from capes to hair accessories and a stuffed bear with a pumpkin for a head.

Students will present their final electives projects to their families at the Fall Electives Showcase on Wednesday, October 19.
