The February equity questions are centered around TRUTH.

If someone experiences a moment or situation differently, does that assume they are right or wrong?
How does this impact or change how you relate or react to others?
Challenge—

Listen with compassion, letting others’ ideas, feelings or feedback lay before you, and make a conscious effort to hear their truth and let it exist.
Avoid saying that’s right or that’s wrong.
Important Dates

*STAFF—If you plan to work from home on Friday, don’t forget to take your computer home sometime this week to make sure everything is in working order. Mine has been glitchy, so I plan to be at school on Friday.*

Champions create a positive school culture that we can all feel, and they make an incredible impact in the lives of students. We are so lucky to have Ms. Jackie and Ms. Mo at our school! If you have a moment, take a look at all of our champions and how they’re making a difference to kids.

THE CAT TREE!!

This week, we received what might be the most unique call of the year. A nearby neighbor called the office to say that she has a naughty kitten. She ordered a cat tree for said kitten. She is not able to put it together on her own. Might there be a student who needs some easy volunteer hours or is willing to help an ol’ lady out? Lucky for her, there was a willing student and staff member. CAT TREE COMPLETE.

So many people fear teens, but I am here to tell you—they do good deeds.

Way to help a neighbor Huynh and Lo! I see you—WE SEE YOU!

Thanks to Ms. Bennett for coordinating and organizing with our neighbor, Dr. Carr.

The January equity questions are centered around LANGUAGE.

How can language become a barrier to our understanding of one another?
What can we do to transform our own discourses?
Challenge—When confronted with an issue or misunderstanding, change the language you use to describe the problem.

*Added challenge this week, based on discussions with staff:

Think about language in two different ways—

The language spoken—is the home language not English? Might it be American Sign Language? That changes the conversation…
It can also be our word choice (in English) or the tone we use when we speak.

Community Violence

When violence occurs in our communities, we know it deeply effects our students, their families and our own school staff. And when the victims are young people, the impact is often more pronounced.

It’s important that the adults in our children’s lives are listening a little more intently right now.

We have a number of resources to help families help children after tragic events: - Suggestions on how to answer questions brought on by grief and a list of community resources - By age group, how to talk to children about shootings - How to help children cope with a gun violence tragedy - Additional tips and activities to help children feel supported every day

Our school counselors are also available to talk to your child.

Please know our team at Silas is here to support all of our kids. Please reach out. We want to hear from you.

Calendar Reminder

There’s no school for students in grades 6-12 on Friday, Feb. 3, due to semester break.

Tacoma Flex

Through a new program called Tacoma Flex, our students can increase the flexibility in their schedule starting by taking two classes online, in addition to completing the rest of their classes in person.

Students can work with their school counselors to enroll in Tacoma Flex. Students should complete the Tacoma Flex course request form by Feb. 15.

What Inspired Me?

Do you know about Unified Sports? We offer soccer, basketball—the current season—and next year we hope to add bowling!

Unified Sports is an opportunity for students with disabilities (“athletes”) to play with typical peers (“partners”) for competition and fun. Different than the rigors of the varsity team, Unified teams practice two or three days/week instead of five or six, and games are usually on Saturdays.

Our team is pictured here with the team from Lincoln—their competition for this week. They play again next Saturday. Details of the when and where to come.

Unified Basketball 2023.jpg

Also, our band hosted middle school musicians with our pep band on Friday night at the girls basketball game versus (undefeated) Lincoln. The added numbers sounded ROBUST, and I honestly think it helped our girls battle on the court. The ladies played WELL but were not able to give the Abes their first L this time around.

Thanks to Band Director Mike Herb and to Coach B for a fantastic night.

The season is short with games on Saturday 1/21, 1/28, and 2/4/2023. Districts will be held on Saturday 2/11/2023 (location TBD) and State on 3/3 and 3/4/2023 in Wenatchee.

What Inspired Me?

Two staff members, Ms. Hockman and Ms. Rehberg, presented the first of a series of workshops for school staff on the teen brain. It was fascinating! While I knew some of what I heard, I also learned more about teen brain development, impulsivity, processing, and why they do some of the things they do. I look forward to the rest of the series. Thank you to Ms. Hockman and Ms. Rehberg for going above and beyond their daily duties to present content interesting to them and FASCINATING to me. KUDOS!!

SiHi POTW January 9th - 13th, 2023

The January equity questions are centered around LANGUAGE.

How can language become a barrier to our understanding of one another?
What can we do to transform our own discourses?
Challenge—When confronted with an issue or misunderstanding, change the language you use to describe the problem.

January 23-February 28: OUR OWN EXPRESSIONS Teen Writing and Art Contest—go to expressions.pcls.us for more information

All-District Spirit Day

It’s time to show our spirit! Friday, Jan. 20, all students are invited to participate in a school district “College and Career Day” spirit day. Students can wear gear for a school or career path they aspire to join. I’m looking forward to seeing how students show their future hopes and dreams.

MLK Jr. Day
Please note there is no school Monday, Jan. 16, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. District offices will also be closed.

Vaccination clinics
Students and adults can get free vaccinations at a series of upcoming clinics in January in February. Get more information on the district website. Apologies that I have no direct link this time.

What Inspired Me?
I’m sick. I’m not sure I have ever been this sick. In my 22 years as teacher or administrator I have never not come back after winter break. What inspired this week me is how the Silas team picks up the slack. Shifts are made for someone to cover my game supervision in the evenings. Meetings are moved to Microsoft Teams, rescheduled or a counselor or assistant principal or behavior interventionist attends in my place. While we strive to improve EVERY DAY and appreciate your feedback toward that goal, something good is happening at Silas High School, y’all. It feels good to know that I can take care of myself and trust that all will be well at school. It’s hard to believe that since 2020 I didn’t take a sick day or quarantine or isolate. I feel like I’m being punished for that now. Take care of yourselves—whatever I have is not viral. Not COVID or RSV or flu. But all the same rules apply. Get your rest. Wear a mask when you feel you should. Wash your hands. All the things we’ve learned.

GO RAMS!

This Week in Athletics

(Please note the Athletic Department sends this out on Friday, and I DO NOT modify it. For example, I know the Rainier Beach basketball game was canceled. That will not be noted below.)
