Please join us in welcoming Dr. Grant Tietjen to the pack!
Dr. Tietjen joins Omari Amili, Christopher Beasley, and Dean Rachel Endo as the fourth formerly incarcerated faculty member on the Tacoma campus--three of whom have tenure. Dr. Tietjen is an Associate Professor specializing in the criminology of system-affected academics. He earned his BA, MA, and PhD in Sociology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His areas of professional interest include criminal justice, criminology, education, criminological theory, mass incarceration, social stigma, and social inequality. Dr. Tietjen has numerous publications to his name in peer-reviewed journals, books, and encyclopedias, as well as book reviews and works in progress. His work covers topics such as the status fragility of formerly incarcerated academics, trauma as a predictor of correctional education usage, justice-impacted identity, stigma faced by formerly incarcerated citizens, and building a formal theory of convict criminology. Moreover, Dr. Tietjen helped to guide the Convict Criminology group from a sub-area of critical criminology in the American Society of Criminology to an official Division. He's also personally supported and mentored formerly incarcerated scholars. Dr. Tietjen's dedication to understanding and improving the lives of those affected by the criminal justice system is evident in his extensive body of work.
Many thanks to the search committee, CJ faculty, and Dean Keva Miller for all the time and effort you put into this search as well as your value for lived expertise. Together, we're building a campus that recognizes the value of this expertise as well as the importance of ensuring that those most impacted by mass incarceration are leading in and benefit from efforts to critique and innovate this and related systems.

Belated congratulations to Michelle Noelani Keiukahi Burchett for receiving the 2020-2021 Washington Campus Compact Civic Leadership Fellowship for her work with UWT's Husky Post-Prison Pathways. Michelle hosted a summit of formerly incarcerated students across the state of Washington to develop a statwide collective of such students--the Washington State Student Council on Reentry (WA SCoR).
Michelle is a woman in recovery and formerly incarcerated college graduate. At present, she is a graduate student @ UWT, MA in Community Planning. She is also a mother, grandmother, and a proud Native Hawaiian. Michelle is putting her life experience before, during, and after her formal education into transformative action with the grassroots, statewide movement of organizing Formerly Incarcerated Students. Her decision to add her name to this project is grounded in the ongoing value that community has brought to her own path of recovery and higher education. At present, through the efforts of many, the Washington State Student Council on Reentry (WA SCoR) is just beginning.
