Teach a person to fish, right? That's what I do for my students (but without the fishy smell). I don't teach you to just play a piece of music; I teach you how to approach learning a piece - finding the beat, thinking about the rhythm, and making any necessary adaptations. I always tell my students, "I don't teach you how to play, I teach you how to teach yourself." You are the master of your own journey. My job is not just to show you how, but to also explain why. Only then can you truly be free (musically speaking, I mean). My Life in Music
As a young adult I realized I wanted to make my living in music, so I moved to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music. While at Berklee I focused my studies on bass performance and composition, graduating in 2003 with a Bachelor's of Music in Film Scoring. It was a fantastic experience to be fully immersed in an environment tailored to musical education and to be surrounded by people who shared my musical passions. There I learned to unlock the secrets of musical success: technical mastery of an instrument and a theoretical understanding of my musical choices as both a performer and a composer. Once in possession of this powerful information, I realized that anything was possible. After Berklee, my musical focus was on bass performance. I enjoyed playing upright and electric bass in a variety of genres including Rock, Big Band, Punk, Country, Swing, Jazz, and Orchestral. In 2012 I founded Step By Step Music to teach private music lessons to students of all ages and skill levels. I currently enjoy growing my skills on guitar, bass, piano, and ukulele as well as writing and recording my own compositions. A Note From Your Teacher...
It’s my great pleasure to impart a multitude of musical skills on a wide variety of students of all ages, backgrounds, and musical inclinations. There’s no subject in music we can’t cover and no person is beyond the reach of musical growth. I have a system for every skill that I teach. I help you put one foot in front of the other, always meeting you where you are at and leading you to the next level in your musical journey. It’s easy when we work together going Step By Step! Sincerely,
Alex Atwood

Ever wonder what you should be putting your time into? Is it reading tab on your bass or guitar, or should you bother to take the time to actually learn to read sheet music.
It sounds like a lot of work, right? Well, in this video I talk about the pros and cons of each and we tally up the score as we go. And at the end I'll tell you what I would do differently if I was starting all over again!
This might be the most important lesson I have to teach...sure, I'm teaching you to memorize the notorious fretboard, but what I'm really teaching you here is how to LEARN.
I love to teach theory...I can't help it! It's what helped me to understand music. But sometimes we can go theory-lite and just get down to creating a groove. You dig? https://youtu.be/wCF-7dATAsA

I always liked modes, but not everyone feels that way. I don't think it's the modes' fault, I think they are just misunderstood. I'd like to help you with that. In this video I will introduce you to my friend, the mode, and I think you'll find that they're not so scarry.
Hy guitar players, this one is for you. What's up with that B-string? In this lesson I help you conquer the all-important major scale pattern as it crosses the B-string in 2 different places.
