Syracuse University is again a proud sponsor of this four-day celebration of world-class jazz and community spirit, happening July 9–12 at Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards in LaFayette, New York, and on campus.

What does it look like when design meets community? 💡🤝

VPA design students partnered with SUNY ESF construction management students to redesign 601 Park Street, an aging bakery and apartment building owned by Northside Futures, into a modern space serving expanded residential and commercial needs.

Last fall, 19 Syracuse University Environmental & Interior Design (EDI) students conducted site visits, met with community members, developed blueprints and presented final designs. SUNY ESF students joined in the spring to prepare estimates, explore grant funding and more.

The result? Real-world experience, real community impact.

“What we achieved goes so much deeper than just a design project,” says EDI student Ella Mchale. “Our community member Fatima helped ground us and gave us the real human context we needed to design with purpose. We took that seriously and created something accessible and meaningful while still bringing our own design concept to the table.”
