Teaching Biography
Laura is a faculty member of the Musical Theater Program in Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts. Prior to joining Syracuse in 2005, she taught voice at Nazareth College and the Eastman School of Music, both in Rochester. Laura also maintains a private voice studio called Singing Garden, designed for singers of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Many of
her students have gone on to successful careers as music educators and as performing and recording artists. Laura believes in cultivating awareness through vocalization. As such, her teaching integrates elements of deep relaxation, breathing practices, and meditation. “My goal is to foster an individual experience, primarily through inner awareness and the breath,” she says. This philosophy underscores much of her approach, whether teaching Bel Canto style or the finer points musical theater vocal technique. Committed to building community through music, Laura often shares her talents with various civic organizations, such as the East Side Homeschool Cooperative. She also has taught at and/or helped found the Fabius-Pompey Summer Musical Theatre Intensive, the Imagine Syracuse Young Musicians Project (which has collaborated with the Syracuse Children’s Chorus and Cathedral Academy at Pompei), Treehouse Musicians, and Nazareth College’s Summer School of the Arts. She regularly shares her time and treasure with the YMCA Arts Branch of Greater Syracuse and Civic Morning Musicals. Laura earned a master’s degree from the Eastman School and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado Boulder, where she studied voice performance with Carol Webber and Barbara Doscher, respectively. Laura is also trained in and has taught various methods, including Music Together, and El Sistema.
