πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ The Window to the World: Syracuse to South Africa video portal project between Rhodes JMS and Newhouse is now up and working at Newhouse in Food.com 😊. Visit soon to chat LIVE with journalism students in Makhanda, South Africa, nearly 8,300 miles away!

Context is Everything:
A large portion of this project is intended to build something together, with all the bumps and obstacles that come with it. What does it mean to co-create 8,237 miles apart during a pandemic with the weight of Apartheid and colonization? We are finding out with our partners at Rhodes, The Syracuse City School District, and the Joza Youth Hub.

A bit of informal video from last week's opening Window to the World: Syracuse to South Africa video portal party.

We were fortunate enough to have musician Asakhe Cuntsulana join us from Makahanda. Asakhe is a young South African musician, teacher, song writer, language practitioner and published author from the Transkei region of the Eastern Cape in Willowvale.

We're happy to have created a bit of joy with our wonderful project partners at Rhodes JMS during the opening party for the Window to the World: Syracuse to South Africa project. Good times 😊.

Big love for all the support from The Dorothy and Marshall M. Reisman Foundation, The John Ben Snow Foundation, Newhouse School at Syracuse University, and Hendricks Chapel.

The intent of the project is to offer a life-size, alternative communication platform to further learning, research and exchange between Syracuse and Makhanda during, and after, the pandemic. Also just to have a bit of fun.

Love this project with SCSD :) More to come!

β€œThis program has given me a different perspective by opening me up to different cultures,” We Are ITC junior Serenity Baxter shared of a new 'video portal' that connects she and her classmates to students in South Africa. β€œThe learners in South Africa performed their national anthem in multiple languages, and it inspired me. It has also helped me to see that there is a universal language among students! Even with a slight language barrier, we all have fun, talking about photography, fashion, and pop culture.”
