Newhouse advertising and visual communications students made a strong showing in the 2026 Graphis New Talent competition, earning a fantastic 34 awards.
Twenty-eight awards went to students from the advertising major’s creative track, tying them with the most advertising awards of all competing schools. Six awards went to students from the graphic design track in the visual communications program. Congratulations to all!

From May 17-23, 12 Newhouse students and three faculty members traveled to the San Francisco Bay Area for a five-day immersion at the intersection of storytelling, media and technology.
Students visited Adobe, Meta, Google, Reddit, Salesforce, Upwork, Strava, Uber, Anthropic, OpenAI, Stanford University and more, while also receiving insight and advice from influential Newhouse and Syracuse University alumni across the region's media and tech industries. https://buff.ly/cFEhMwK

For a last-minute assignment in Canada, Newhouse visual communications assistant professor Michael Snyder called on alumnus Justin Dalaba G’25 to help him photograph Canadian map turtles under the ice for National Geographic’s Preserving Legacies project.

🏆️ Syracuse University finished first in the broadcast category and third overall at the Hearst Journalism Awards in another strong showing by Newhouse journalism students at the National Championships this week in San Francisco.
In individual contests, Evan Fay, a junior broadcast and digital journalism (BDJ) major, took second place in the audio category. Fay’s second-place finish included a $7,500 scholarship.
Boone Kilpatrick, also a junior BDJ major, was a finalist in the National Championships, earning a $1,500 scholarship.
After winning first place in the Podcast category last month, BDJ student Phoebe Gulsen ’26 was invited by Hearst organizers to San Francisco to produce a podcast about the National Championships and was also awarded a $1,500 scholarship.

Three Newhouse students participated in the National Championships with BDJ major Evan Fay earning 2nd place in the broadcast category.

Congratulations to Newhouse students Jess Van ’26, Kaitlin Campbell ’26 and Alex Fairchild ’29, who earned top honors for their video projects in the White House News Photographers Association's “The Eyes of History” contest.
Van is a photography major in the visual communications department; Campbell is a broadcast and digital journalism major; and Fairchild is an active duty Marine Corps sergeant in the advanced military visual journalism program.

Syracuse University just launched a critical tool in the fight to save local news. The Local News Research Hub, developed by the Local NExT Lab at the university's Institute for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship (IDJC) in partnership with Rebuild Local News, is a searchable database proving why local journalism matters.
“Strengthening local news reduces polarization and empowers communities,” said Margaret Talev, Kramer Director of the IDJC and professor of practice of magazine, news and digital journalism at the Newhouse School. “We are proud of Local NExT’s innovative work and our partnership with Rebuild Local News.”
Newhouse co-leads the IDJC with the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
