Data Warriors students representing Henninger High School, Nottingham High School, and the Regional STEAM High School recently traveled to Buffalo to present about the investigations they've conducted in equity and civics.

They spoke with 100+ Master Teachers about their Youth Participatory Action Research - which focuses on food justice, snow removal, lead poisoning, code violations, the New York State Lottery, and more. Before they headed home, they made a quick stop to see Niagara Falls! You can hear the Data Warriors talk about their research - and ideas for Syracuse - at the upcoming SCSD Everybody Counts celebration at the Everson Museum of Art on May 30th.

“Being on Capitol Hill changed my perspective,” We Are ITC senior Aphone Shin shared. “I realized that my voice is really important, and my voice matters in this space. I’m proud that I got to represent my City and that I got to fight the stigma that in Syracuse, we are at a disadvantage.”

Aphone and Nottingham High School junior Anab Ali (pictured far right and second to right) were two of just nine high school students nationwide to use their voices to advocate on Capitol Hill recently, speaking in support of college preparation programs and other critical educational needs. These students were chosen to attend the National College Attainment Network Leadership Summit in Washington DC, representing the SU STEP program and the Erie21 program! There, they had the opportunity to connect with local Congressman John Mannion and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, among others. We’re so proud of their leadership!
