A common bad habit in Wing Chun is "chasing the hands," where beginners try to manufacture arm-to-arm contact to get into Chi Sau range. This approach is backward. Your focus should always be on striking the centerline; this forward pressure obliges the opponent to respond with a block, evasion, or counter-shot. It is precisely at this moment of reaction that your Chi Sau instincts kick in. Heed the old wisdom: seek the body, not the hands.

Recently, a friend sent me a video of someone claiming to teach Wing Chun. In the video, he stated that anyone who spars or fights using the traditional Wing Chun guard doesn't know what they're doing.

That statement only demonstrates that he doesn't understand the when, where, and why of the traditional Wing Chun guard.

In this (private lesson) video, I'll explain why the traditional Wing Chun guard is so important, when it should be used, and the role it plays in real application.

Here's a hint: it's all about range.

For those that follow our page, most will know that Sijo Bruce Lee's base for his martial art Jeet Kune Do (JKD) originated from Wing Chun Kung Fu.

Some may say he "abandoned" Wing Chun during his search and discovery but that will be incorrect. Training in both WC and JKD I have had the chance to understand the [for a lack of a better term] "systems" and good JKD follows the principle & concepts found in WC.

Moreover, Sijo Bruce Lee operated JKD in a laboratory type of setting constantly testing [primarily through pressure testing/sparring] the things he would either add or discard from his system. Through G**o Dan Inosanto, Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) and Grappling arts [like Judo, Classic Jijitsu & Wrestling - those arts available at the time] also played a role in JKD.

SMAA Wishes G**o Dan Inosanto a Happy 90th Birthday‼️

Of course my personal love for Filipino Martial Arts (FMA)/Kali-Escrima was started many moons ago but it was not until I started training with Sifu Eric Winfree 🙏 that my personal development skyrocketed - miss you Sifu.

I had the lucky opportunity to train with G**o Dan a few times at local seminars and he is absolutely amazing! And to still be teaching and training at this age is inspiring!!!

Answers ✅️...

1) On the contrary, you actually get "into shape" as you train martial arts like Kung fu. The benefits start from day 1 but are not usually realized till at least day 90.

2) No experience necessary to start. We have students whom has had previous backgrounds in other martial arts and some whom Kung fu is their first. It's for everyone.

3) You are actually never old to start. We have students in their 40s, 50s & 60s. Well known Instructors in the field like Sifu Francis Fong (to be 80 years old) & G**o Dan Inosanto (90 years old next week) are still training!

4) Martial arts can be and is also much more than just fighting. We have members that are competitive, some learning self-defense, some interested in the culture, tradition and discipline, some just looking for activity and meeting new people, and some just needing relief from the everyday stresses 😪 & anxiety 🥴 of life!

5) Kids do benefit from martial arts however it cannot be overlooked that ANYONE including adults also benefit. We happen to be an Adult ONLY program especially because Wing Chun Kung Fu is very cerebral 🧠 along with the need for dedicated concentration. But, we have fun ☺ and lots of laughs 😂 in the process!!!

Looking back, I'm incredibly thankful for all the amazing people I've had the privilege to train with and teach over the years. Faces come and go as life takes us in different directions, but I'll always think of them as family.

One of our members recently dug up this old photo from 2015 (turned into a pretty cool poster) of our sparring group, Team Vicious. Every week we'd get together and spend hours doing what we loved—putting in round after round of hard sparring, learning, laughing, and pushing each other to improve.

Time has passed, but one thing hasn't changed. Syracuse Martial Arts Academy is still going strong, and we're still putting in those sparring rounds.
