Graduate Students who are enrolled in a PhD program in a US academic institution and have ABD status are encouraged to apply. Post-Doctoral candidates who completed their PhD in or after 2017 are also eligible. AIPS will fund travel, lodging, and per diem for all awardees.

This half-day symposium will take place on Thursday, October 20 during the Annual Conference on South Asia in Madison, WI. It showcases the new research being done by approximately six to eight junior scholars in the field of Pakistan Studies. AIPS identifies senior scholars who will read the accepted papers and provide feedback, mentorship, and guided discussion after the presentations. The Syracuse University Art Museum has a large collection of Mithila art, of which this watercolor and ink painting of Durga on a Lion by artist Yamuna Devi (Indian, born in Jitwapur in Bihar 1915 - 2011) is a part of.

As the art form evolved into contemporary times, the women of Mithila were encouraged to apply their painting skills to paper as a means of supplementing their incomes through sales to tourists and art collectors.
