The Robert Bogdan Disability Collection 03/06/2018

A short article about the Robert Bogdan Collection now housed at the Yale Medical Library:

3500 REAL PHOTO POSTCARDS, PLUS, Now @ Yale Medical Library

“I'm feeling separation anxiety," Dr. Robert Bogdan told us, when we asked him about the big move he undertook recently. "It has been a life's work. and now it is elsewhere. I am used to thinking and looking at them much of the time."

DHM fans know that we regularly use elements from the “Robert Bogdan Collection” in our work. Bob's disability history image collection has greatly enhanced the ability of all disability studies scholars to establish the full range of the representation of people with disabilities in 20th century photography. And, scholars of the future will greatly appreciate this indefatigable collector's treasure-hunting efforts. Recently, all 3500 images in the collection were acquired by Yale University’s Medical Library Special Collections, which has already posted a preliminary inventory of the archives online.

Bogdan is one of disability history’s foundational scholars. His work is especially attentive to the visual rhetoric of disability, including the material production and distribution context of these ephemeral artifacts—photo postcards, pamphlets, carte de visites. He has written about the images and pamphlets distributed by P. T. Barnum as part of the American Museum and later in circus sideshows and by disabled beggars selling a variety of services and objects. He coined the phrase "citizen portraits" to describe photo postcards with families and individual photo portraits. His books include Freak Show: Presenting Human Odditites for Amusement and Profit, Picturing Disability, and more.

What many in the disability scholarship community may not know is that Bogdan also has a spectacular collection of panoramic photographs that includes images of mutual aid society members, institutions, union and other laboring groups, athletic teams, musicians, school faculty and student groups, veterans, and more He also collects and writes about photographers and postcards associated with the Adirondacks. Bogdan is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Social Science and Education at Syracuse University. After teaching for 35 years at Syracuse he and his wife retired to rural Vermont.
