Jowonio School

Jowonio School Jowonio is a not-for-profit inclusive pre-school serving young children The school aims to provide an appropriate individualized program for each child.

The mission of Jowonio is to provide model inclusive programs for young children, where diversity is celebrated and all are free to learn and grow. Jowonio's approach is based on the following beliefs: all children can grow and learn; all children have a right to a quality education in the same setting; children grow through their relationships with adults and peers; parent involvement is welcome and needed; "school" means more than academics, social and emotional growth must be nurtured as carefully as cognitive development; a quality classroom grows out of a balance of adult-provided structure with opportunities for children to explore, initiate, make choices and problem solve about their world; and a planful environment, clear expectations and positive models can help young children learn diverse and appropriate ways to interact with materials and people.

The classrooms are coming together, and we’re getting ready for another year at Jowonio. 💙

This week, our staff has been learning together, getting classrooms ready, planning, and doing all the behind-the-scenes work that goes into starting a new school year.

Today and tomorrow, our students get to come in, meet their teachers, and check out their classrooms during visiting days. And then on Monday…we’re back together! We can’t wait to welcome all of our students and families back for another year of learning, playing, and growing! Here we go!

SLPs: are you looking for a little more flexibility in your work life? We’re looking for a part-time Speech-Language Pathologist to join the Jowonio team this fall!

This is a flexible position, approximately 15 hours a week and a 10-month school calendar. There is a possibility for additional hours as opportunities arise.

What is special about this role? It’s the people. Our SLPs are part of the classroom and part of the team, working alongside teachers, therapists, and families in a school community that is collaborative, inclusive, and genuinely supportive.

If you’re looking for meaningful work without the traditional full-time schedule, this might be a good fit.

What does Physical Therapy look like at Jowonio?

It looks like therapy that happens where children naturally are: in classrooms, on the playground, at Trike Town, and along Sarah's Path, our nature trail. We have an exceptionally well equipped treatment space including partial weight support fall prevention harness system and an extensive adaptive equipment lending library.

It looks like collaborating with teachers, families, and an experienced team of therapists.

It looks like a 10-month school calendar, 3 weeks of PTO, paid professional development, and the option to work our 6-week summer program.

We’re hiring a Physical Therapist! If you’re looking for a workplace that’s collaborative, inclusive, and a little different from the typical preschool setting, we’d love to hear from you.

A huge thank you to the United Way of Central New York for putting together the Day of Caring yesterday! We were so thrilled to welcome an incredible group of volunteers from Upstate Medical University. Together they helped us clean and reorganize indoor spaces and repaint buildings on Trike Town.

We are so appreciative for their support!

Team Spotlight: Friends of Jowonio (FOJ)🛠️
Team: Craig, Sam, Josh, Tammy, & Mike

Behind every classroom, muddy adventure, snowy morning, and community event at Jowonio is an incredible FOJ team keeping everything running. From installing new security cameras, to redoing the floors, to changing fencing to improve supervision in our outdoor spaces, to clearing the drains, to removing snow and ice, to setting up for meetings and events, to cleaning up countless messes, they still somehow always made sure we had enough toilet paper and tissues.

They help keep Jowonio safe, welcoming, functional, and beautiful every single day, often in ways most people never even see. We are so grateful for all they do for our community.

Classroom Spotlight: Kangaroo Room🦘
Team: Jess, Kate, Sam, & Sara

The Kangaroo Room kids had a wonderful year of learning and exploring new ideas and building friendships! We embraced our long winter and spent lots of time playing in the snow. We welcomed Spring and were very excited to ride bikes, find snails, and play with bubbles. And not a day went by without listening and dancing to a class favorite Baby Shark!!!

Team Spotlight: Family Services 💜
Team: Niki, Jamie, Caitlin, & Melissa

The Family Services Team is here for children and families through every step of the Jowonio journey. From helping families navigate services and community resources to supporting new students, coordinating family events, responding to bumps and bruises, and helping children work through big feelings, this team makes sure every child is supported both inside and outside the classroom.

Much of their work happens behind the scenes, but it helps make Jowonio the caring, inclusive community that it is. We are so grateful for all they do for our children and families.
