Giving Day Starts Now!
Giving Day has begun! On this day, Saturday, October 26, we celebrate our birthday as this is the day the Institute was chartered 59 years ago! To celebrate, we’re having our first-ever Giving Day.
From now until 11 PM tonight, we hope to generate contributions from our entire community to benefit the work supported by USITT’s Setting the Next Stage Campaign.
We know you have busy lives, so here are three easy steps to participate in Giving Day:
Make your gift today! Or from your mobile phone, text GIVE to 315-305-3604. If you have already made a gift to the campaign, thank you! By making an additional gift today, you can help us meet the matching challenges of the day. Scroll down to see those challenges.
Email your contacts. Email your friends and networks and ask them to join you in making a gift to USITT on Giving Day.You can just forward this e-mail to them.
Spread the word on social media. Talk about on your own social media outlets. Post your own USITT story on Facebook, tweet why you give, or post a selfie on Instagram using , the campaign’s official hashtag.
When you give today, here’s how your money doubles or triples:
City Theatrical Giving Day All Day Challenge. City Theatrical will match the first $15,000 in gifts made on Giving Day.
At the times shown, those sponsors will match gifts received during their Challenge Match hours.
8 AM: $500 — Founders and Past Presidents’ Challenge sponsored by Dr. Joel Rubin and Mark Shanda
9 AM: $1,000 – Load In Tech Commission Challenge sponsored by Bill Browning
10 AM: $500 – Current and Past Board Members Bacon Break sponsored by Lea Asbell-Swanger
11 AM: $1000 - Lighting Focus Challenge sponsored by Vincent Lighting Systems and Paul Vincent
Noon: $600 - Tech Rehearsal Challenge sponsored by International Activities Committee
1 PM: $500 – Dress Rehearsal Challenge sponsored by Point Park University
2 PM: $500 - Afternoon Coffee Break Challenge – Commissions Challenge sponsored by Carolyn Satter
3 PM: $700 – Run Through Challenge sponsored by the Publications Committee
4 PM: $500 – Tech Table Talk Challenge sponsored by Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee actively seeking to include you at the table
6 PM: $500 — Dinner Break Challenge sponsored by Dana Taylor and the Education Commission
7PM: $500 – Presidential Curtain Speech sponsored by USITT President Dan Culhane
8 PM: $1,000 — Curtain Time, East Coast Challenge sponsored by Bill Browning
9 PM: $1,000 — Curtain Time, Central Time Challenge sponsored by Bill Browning
10 PM: $1,000 —Curtain Time, Mountain Time Challenge sponsored by Bill Browning
11 PM: $1,000 - Curtain Time, Pacific Time Challenge sponsored by Bill Browning.
All times shown are EDT. All challenges are 1-to-1 matches.
Here’s an example of tripling: If you give $10 during the 8 AM hour, City Theatrical will match it and the Founders and Past Presidents Challenge sponsors will match it. So your $10 becomes $30 if you give at 8 AM!
Help us to spread the word. Please email your friends and networks and ask them to join you in making a gift to USITT on Giving Day. And please spread the word on social media. Talk about on your own social media outlets. Post your own USITT story on Facebook, tweet why you give, or post a selfie on Instagram using , the campaign’s official hashtag.
Setting the Next Stage will provide improved financial liquidity, security, and stability for the Institute while establishing a strong platform for growth in member services and programming.
Newly raised funds given throughout the campaign will be distributed at the donor’s request to any one of our well-established funds: the Edward F. Kook Fund to support research; New Century Fund to support awards and early career programs, diversity and inclusion initiatives and the Rigging Safety Initiative; Samuel H. Scripps International Fund to support international activities; USITT Fund to support projects for the future of USITT. (Gifts to the USITT Fund are restricted and only the investment growth of this fund is used.)
We thank you for your past, present, and future donations which secure essential funding for USITT’s work.
Please support us again on Giving Day!

There is a national day of giving for USITT this weekend. It doesn't matter how much you give but that you give a gift in any amount to help us reach our goal!
An important request from David Grindle, Executive Director, USITT
USITT’s first ever Giving Day is this Saturday, October 26. Please help us reach our goals by making your contribution today by clicking online https://www.usitt.org/donate or from your mobile phone, text GIVE to 315-305-3604.
October is the month USITT was “born” according to the legal documents. As such we are hoping to make strides toward fulfilling our campaign goal during this, our birth month. Giving Day on Oct. 26 will help us meet that goal.,
I ask you to consider what part of USITT’s mission is dear to you. Is it the research that we support? Our international connections? The future members of the industry? Or just the Institute as a whole? Each of these has a fund to make a gift.
Our goal in this campaign has been to shore up the four basic funds of USITT. This helps us ensure we have the funds to continue research funding, international connections, student and early career initiatives, and to build the USITT Fund for support of the Institute. Each of these funds ties back directly to the charter written by our founders and gives us the assurance that we can continue the mission they began as it applies to the industry of today.
While big gifts certainly make a “splash,” the size of the gift doesn’t matter. A few dollars or a few dollars each month go together to make a lasting impact. It helps us support people like Steph Waaser in her research to mitigate the spin inherent in single point rigging. It provides rigging inspections for high schools along with safety training. We currently have the funding to support 20-24 schools per year, but there are more than 50 applications we can’t fill and funding is literally the only barrier.
USITT is opening doors for people at all points in their careers, and especially those in underrepresented communities. While the entertainment industry has a reputation for being a welcome space for all, that isn’t always the case. We are making efforts to change that through our Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion work that is funded through the Diversity Initiative in the New Century Fund.
Sometimes I have to remind myself of all of the work that USITT is doing beyond producing the Annual Conference. Those are the things that this funding campaign is set — to raise money for and ensure future funding.
I ask that you consider a gift to USITT. One time, recurring, or a pledge over several years, each gift makes a difference in someone’s life. And if you are thinking about estate planning, those gifts count too. Our Loft Block Society is made of people that have notified us that they have left a bequest to USITT upon their death. If you’ve done this but not told us, you can help us meet our goal and we can recognize your generosity today.
Thank you for being part of USITT. We appreciate all those we serve and we hope you will look to us in the coming year for more connections and resources as we Set the Next Stage for the next 60 years.
Again, Please help us reach our goals by making your contribution today by clicking online https://www.usitt.org/donate or from your mobile phone, text GIVE to 315-305-3604
Thank you for your support!

A Guide To The Life And Work Of Scenic Carpenters - Theatre Nerds
I’m a professional scenic carpenter. I chose this profession while I was in college, and I love what I do, but this position doesn’t exactly get a lot of attention in the theatre world. In fact, I’ve had so many people ask me what a scenic carpenter even is, so today I’m going to give … Mo...
