It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Margaret "Peg" Snyder. Peg was a champion for human rights and especially women's rights. Described as the UN's first feminist, Peg Snyder was the founding director of the United Nation's Department for Women (UNIFEM). She was also a co-founder of Women's World Banking and of the African Training and Research Centre for Women. Her accomplishment are monumental. She was an extraordinary presence and she loved Le Moyne. We owe her a debt of gratitude. She came to Le Moyne many times and talked to students about her incredible career. She was a truly wonderful role model!
Here is her obituary from the New York Times:
Margaret C. Snyder, the U.N.’s ‘First Feminist,’ Dies at 91 Inspired by her liberal Roman Catholic upbringing, she refocused the organization’s development efforts to include women’s empowerment.

Dear PSC Students, Alumni, and Friends,
The past weeks have seen unprecedented developments in the social and political worlds, as well as in the fight for racial justice. Witnessing the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and too many other people of color has rightly sparked outrage across the nation and led to protests demanding justice and demonstrating solidarity. Compounding these feelings are the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has disproportionately taken the lives of the economically vulnerable and members of other historically disadvantaged groups, as well as images of state violence against protesters in Washington, DC and other cities.
The values of social justice that guide the Political Science Department at Le Moyne, as well as our sense of compassion and humanity, compel us to condemn all acts of violence and injustice committed against the most vulnerable members of society. Condemnation, however, is not enough. We must also act in support of justice. As a department committed to educating our students about the role of power in all aspects of politics, we see our primary duty as providing the knowledge upon which any action must be based. Below you will find links that will provide some excellent resources on how to understand the roots of the current crisis and how you can help advance the cause of justice and anti-racism.
Beyond this, we also understand the emotional toll this is taking on you all, particularly our students and alumni of color. We would like to remind you that our campus community maintains resources to help you cope with any feelings you may need to discuss. It’s OK to not feel OK.
Finally, if you do choose to join any of the protests in your local communities, please be safe, wear a mask, and maintain social distance as much as possible.
Be well, we miss you all, and we can’t wait to see everyone as soon as possible.
