I have been offering private piano lessons for all ages since 2001. I have BA degrees in Anthropology from UC Santa Barbara and Music (Syracuse University).
I've taught piano privately for 25 years, in California, Indiana, and now Syracuse, New York. My students have ranged from age three to adult. My Teaching Philosophy emphasizes an approach to piano that builds multiple areas of musicianship: sight reading, ear training, rhythmic exercises, and theory (understanding the structure and history of classical music). Most of a typical lesson with me wil
l be working on learning pieces, and a smaller portion will be used to build those other skills: theory work, technique, ear training, etc. For younger students, this helps to keep them engaged and entertained for the duration of the lessons. Older students also find that the components of the lessons tie in and reinforce each other in their understanding of their music. My approach emphasizes reading ability right from the beginning. This helps students learn and practice pieces independently. My expectation for students and (in the case of children) their families is that they will make a commitment to regular practice. Each student signs a Policy and Contract at the beginning of the year that describes his or her commitment as well as mine. Rates And Availability
