Law enforcement has a lot of work to do in a short amount of time, which is why it’s critical to establish processes for digital forensic triage at crime scenes.

Key takeaways from our latest blog:
✅ Why on-scene triage is critical for both evidence preservation and immediate investigative leads
✅ The real-world challenges agencies face when trying to implement it
✅ Practical, flexible approaches to making triage work with existing personnel and tools
✅ Key considerations for building a defensible and effective SOP

Read the full discussion on best practices, SOPs, and the path forward.👇

🎙️ The Artifact and the Assumption: Decoding Digital Forensics Bias

A digital trail is supposed to be neutral. Code doesn't have opinions. Data doesn't lie. But reality is a bit more complicated.

Today we’re looking at how algorithmic gaps in forensic tools can cause critical artifacts to be missed entirely and how cognitive biases like confirmation bias can steer conclusions in the wrong direction without an analyst even realizing.

We also talk about what responsible forensic practice actually looks like: rigorous protocols, independent auditing, and a culture of intellectual honesty in the lab.

Digital evidence has to hold up in court, in investigations, and in the pursuit of justice, so we have to be willing to interrogate not just the data, but the process.

Humans Behind the Keyboards: Elizabeth McPherson! At Hexordia, we sit at the intersection of deep technical research, training, and public service. We believe the people behind our mission are just as fascinating as the data they recover.

Next up in our series is Elizabeth McPherson, our Mobile Exploitation Analyst.

Elizabeth brings serious academic weight to our lab, holding both a Bachelor’s in Cyber Security Engineering and a Master’s in Digital Forensics from George Mason University. Between her degrees and her GASF (Advanced Smartphone Forensics) certification, she’s built a career on deep-dive technical research.

The Mission: Scaling the "Aha!" Moment - For Elizabeth, the work is about more than just data, it’s about impact. While she loves working cases, she finds a unique reward in teaching others how to do the same.

"My favorite part of teaching is when students learn about a tool, methodology, or other piece of knowledge that gives them the 'aha!' moment on how to work through a niche problem they're encountering," she says. By mentoring future examiners, she feels she’s helping solve more cases than any one person could alone.

The Desert Island Tool - True to her technical roots, if she were stranded on a desert island with just one tool, she’d skip the scripts and go straight for ADB (Android Debug Bridge). It’s a powerful, versatile choice for someone who truly understands the inner workings of mobile devices.

Lab Life & Late Nights - What does the research process actually look like? Elizabeth admits that while she aims for a tidy personal desk, her workstation in the Hexordia lab is a different story. She says it quickly becomes a "mad scientist" cable and hardware jungle on a regular basis. Those late-night sessions are strictly fueled by hot tea, decaf coffee, and plenty of popcorn.

Off-the-Clock - When she isn’t navigating a sea of cables or hunting for data, Elizabeth is likely:

⛷️ Hitting the slopes.

📚 Getting lost in a good book or painting.

🎲 Playing board games with friends.

We’re thrilled to bridge the gap between "hard science" and "human curiosity" by having Elizabeth’s expertise and heart for mentorship on the Hexordia team!

🎙️ Forensics Role Call: Sworn vs. Non-Sworn Digital Forensics Examiners

Today, we’re diving into the real differences between sworn and non-sworn examiners. We cover:

• Legal authority and how it shapes case outcomes.
• Career mobility and budgetary realities for specialized staff.
• Why separation of duties is non-negotiable for maintaining integrity.
• Managing morale and addressing the psychological toll of the job.

🚩 We saved one of the most interesting categories for last.

Part 4 of our Magnet Virtual Summit 2026 CTF walkthrough is live, and it covers the cipher questions. Decoding, pattern recognition, and thinking outside the box are all part of what makes this category stand out in a CTF.

This wraps up the last of the MVS 2026 walkthrough series. If you're just finding it now, the full walkthrough covering iOS, Android, Mac, and ciphers is all there waiting for you.

Congratulations to all who participated in the CTF and to those reviewing these questions and answers. Your skills are sharper!

Let us know what your favorite question was to work on!
