In honor of the kids going back to school this week… St. Joseph’s Health Hospital became the first teaching hospital in Syracuse in 1872. Geneva Medical College moved to Syracuse and affiliated with St. Joseph’s Health Hospital to give students access to adequate training facilities. The school became known as Syracuse University School of Medicine. The first medical staff and medical education program were organized, ensuring formal, hands-on training for future physicians and beginning a legacy of loyal corps of highly competent medical practitioners.

On Wednesday, July 12, St. Joseph's Health Auxiliary staff and community volunteers worked together to pack backpacks for local students. ✏️📓🏫 The bags contain the essentials: paper, notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, rulers, and glue.
St. Joseph's Health Auxiliary has organized this event for 17 years, fulfilling a need for students in the community who may otherwise not have access to school supplies. The backpacks will be distributed to the hospital-based clinics that see children for dental cleanings and physicals.
This year we hit a record number of backpacks stuffed at 840! 🎒 Excellent work to the St. Joseph's staff and volunteers.

Throwback Thursday: The original charter for St. Joseph’s Hospital stated, “In the admittance and treatment of patients no distinctions shall ever be made because of theological belief, nationality or color.” These words have remained sacred to the institution throughout its existence as root beliefs of inclusion and equal access to excellent health care, and they drive the mission and people of St. Joseph’s Health to this day.

The 4th of July always brings to mind hot summer days, cool dips in the pool, and fireworks to light up the night sky. 🎆
Amidst all that fun, it’s important to stay safe so you don't spend time in the Emergency Department.
The team at St. Joseph's Health has put together a few simple safety reminders for the upcoming holiday. 💡
- Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit - hot enough to melt some metals.
- Keep a lit grill away from children and pets. Don’t leave it unattended. Never grill indoors or in a garage.
- Never leave children unattended when swimming. Know their swimming capabilities and limitations.
- If swimming at a lake or beach, make sure a lifeguard is present.
- Apply sunscreen to protect from the sun.
- Drink water to stay hydrated.
- If driving to visit family or friends, remember to give yourself plenty of time. Expect traffic.
- And remember to wear a seat belt.
Lastly, if you do need medical care over the holiday weekend, remember where to go for the care you need. 🏥 Link: https://bit.ly/3NSm6DS
