When math feels hard, it’s often because we’re asked to remember rules before we can see the idea.

Using objects you can touch, drawings you can see, and numbers you can explain helps the brain make sense of the math—and hold onto it.

Seeing the math builds understanding.
Understanding makes learning stick.

Save this to make fractions less confusing. 💗

When students understand the why, the how becomes so much easier.
Conceptual understanding and procedure aren’t opposites. They’re partners.
We build meaning first, so the steps aren’t guesses… they’re sense-making.
That’s how math becomes doable, joyful, and lasting.

Juneteenth by the Numbers
The math of freedom isn’t abstract—it’s deeply human.
And the numbers tell a story we all need to teach.

➡️ 1865: The year freedom finally reached Texas
➡️ 2.5 years: How long did it took for the Emancipation Proclamation to be enforced there
➡️ 250,000+: People still enslaved when Juneteenth began
➡️ 2021: When Juneteenth became a federal holiday

These numbers aren’t just historical. They’re reminders.
That freedom was delayed.
That truth was withheld.
That justice was uneven.

But also that knowledge is power.
And as educators, we hold that power whenever we center stories like this in our classrooms.

Let Juneteenth be a day of truth-telling, celebration, and action.
Let’s teach kids to ask the hard questions—and to believe in a world that answers with justice.

👀 PSA: Just because a student used a strategy doesn’t mean they’re fluent.
Say it with me: Strategies ≠ Fluency. 🙃

Take “counting on,” for example. It’s most effective for +0, +1, +2 facts and starts from the larger number. It’s not ideal for something like 5 + 7.

Real fluency = using what makes sense, efficiently, accurately, and flexibly.

If you’ve been handed a strategy list and told it’s a fluency progression…
🫣 I’ve got you.

Grateful, Inspired, and Fully Booked in April

April brought brand shoots, birthday candles, spring sunshine, space dreams, and sweet sips with friends.

1. Kicked off the month with a radiant brand session with capturing the heart of SmartSparks.

2. Celebrated my favorite human’s birthday with sparkles and sweets.

3. Soaked up spring break in Beacon, NY with waterfalls, walks, and winding down.

4. Completely inspired seeing NASA astronaut (and Corcoran grad!) Jeanette Epps return to speak to SCSD students. Dreams really do launch from our halls.

5. Closed out the month surrounded by friends and family. Cheers to all the little moments that make life full.

Here’s to the energy April brought and the goodness May is already blooming with.
