Tonight is Mahashivratri. One of the holiest nights in Hinduism, it signifies overcoming darkness & ignorance, and also marks the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Classical dance traditions are deeply connected to this festival. According to one legend in Shaivism, this is the night when Shiva performed his cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction. Historically, Mahashivratri has served as a confluence of artists for annual dance festivals at major temples in India, such as Chidambaram, Konark, and Khajuraho.
