WE’RE HIRING! Join our team of Outdoor Playmakers this Fall! 🌿🪵✨

Are you passionate about nature-based learning, child-led play, and embracing the creativity (and mess) that accompanies both? Wonder Roots is seeking an enthusiastic Afterschool Assistant Educator for our Wednesday Afterschool Adventurers program in Hinesburg for the 2026–2027 school year!

The Details:
🗓 When: Wednesdays, 1:45 PM – 5:15 PM (Follows the CVSD school calendar)
📍 Where: Hinesburg site (100% outdoors!)
💡 Great for: Outdoor educators, university students, subs, or anyone who loves empowering kids through unstructured play, calculated risk-taking, and big body adventure.

At one of our programs, a group of kids decided to build a structure out of logs, pallets and a few tarps & cloth. 🪵

No blueprints, no adults directing where the pieces should go. Just raw materials and a shared goal.

For forty minutes, they bargained, piled materials, tested the structure, and recruited peers sitting on the sidelines to help haul heavy ends. No one was thinking about "social-emotional learning"-- they just wanted a roof over their fort.

When you remove fixed playground equipment, physical status fades and imagination takes over. The quietest kid often becomes the lead architect because they figured out how to hang a curtain or wedge a support beam into place.

This is child-led collaboration in action. 🌲

We all know the 5 basic senses-- but when it comes to self-regulation, 3 hidden sensory systems do the heavy lifting:

🧠 Proprioception: Body position and force (built by hauling heavy logs, pushing boulders, and lifting beams).

⚖️ Vestibular: Balance and spatial orientation (built by hanging upside down, walking balance logs, and rolling).

🫀 Interoception: Reading internal signals like temperature, heart rate, and muscle tension.

Unstructured outdoor play naturally integrates all three systems at once, giving kids the sensory input they need to focus and regulate. 🌲

Damp earth, pine needles, quiet paws, and the green canopy overhead. 🌲

The bustle of programs begin this week, yet the forest holds a steady calm. In the days and moments before welcoming students into the woods we take the opportunity to sit, soak in the nature around us, and finally exhale that breath we've been holding.

Nature ground us-- roots us to the here and now.

When kids step into an unhurried space without screens or rigid schedules, their nervous systems settle. They notice the details-- a beetle on a mossy log, a hawk overhead, or finding the exact weight stick needed for a forest shelter.

We are grateful for the opportunity to do this work, to create these environments and be that space for our community.

You don't need a big patch of woods to find your calm. Take this as your reminder to find a little patch of earth near you. The green patch along the highway, a sidewalk crack with the tiny plant, the way the sun shines through your kitchen window.

Wonder. Wish. And breathe. Wishing you a grounded outdoor breath today. 🌿

Teachers, this is for you!! We want to encourage you to include, simple, open-ended PLAY into your school day. The first few weeks of school are full of "get to know you" activities-- Ice breakers, name games and activities.

We have repeatedly seen the power that play has on building community-- allowing children to demonstrate their strengths, engage their creativity, move their bodies and get to know each other.

The start of school is one of the biggest transitions kids have each year. As educators, you have the ability to set up a foundation of connection-- between you and your students and their peers. PLAY not only benefits your students, it will also give YOU an amazing insight on your students that you wouldn't necessarily see otherwise. How so?

Allow long stretches of uninterrupted play. Step back and observe your students. And you'll discover:
➡Group and individual communication skills & problem solving skills.
➡Which students readily demonstrate independence, leadership skills.
➡Which kids gravitate toward slower or fast-paced activities.
➡How/in what way children use materials or use their imaginations.

"Be careful!"

It’s the most natural phrase to yell when a child climbs a tall stump or hauls a heavy log. But most of the time, "be careful" just signals adult anxiety without giving kids actionable info.

When children encounter physical risk outdoors, we swap policing for facilitation. Try asking:

"What’s your plan for your feet here?"
"Does that branch feel sturdy or bendy?"
"How does your body feel up on that rock?"

This simple shift moves kids out of reaction and straight into critical thinking, risk assessment, and body awareness. 🌲
