At Pogies Academy, we do not believe one curriculum is automatically the best choice for every subject. We carefully select the programs that we believe will give our students the strongest, most engaging education possible.

This year, we are excited to incorporate Beautiful Feet Books into our history and geography curriculum. We have selected their charter school versions, which are specifically designed to be secular.

Beautiful Feet Books is heavily influenced by the Charlotte Mason philosophy of education. Children learn through rich, meaningful literature often called “living books.” These are beautifully written stories, biographies and picture books that help students connect with real people, places, cultures and historical events.

Students will explore history and geography through reading, thoughtful discussion, oral narration, writing, maps, art, nature study, recipes and hands-on projects. They will be encouraged to ask questions, explain what they have learned in their own words, consider different perspectives and make connections between subjects.

This approach helps history become something children experience and remember. Geography becomes more than memorizing names on a map. Students begin to understand how land, climate, culture, wildlife and history are all connected.
The curriculum also works exceptionally well with our small groups and short learning rotations. Younger students can respond through conversation, drawing and hands-on activities, while older students can complete more detailed mapping, notebook work and written narration. This allows each child to engage with the same meaningful material at an appropriate level.

Beautiful Feet Books fits naturally with what we are building at Pogies Academy. It is literature rich, discussion based, hands-on, flexible and designed to inspire genuine curiosity. Combined with our outdoor adventures, field trips and real-world learning, we believe it will help give our students a strong and memorable foundation in history, geography and the wider world.

There is a lot of talk about our outdoor programs, but that does not take away from the strong academic foundation we provide. We carefully select what we believe is the best curriculum for each subject and combine it with small group learning, focused 20 minute rotations, and meaningful brain breaks between subjects. Our students receive a rigorous education in an environment designed to keep them engaged, supported, and excited to learn.

At Pogies Academy, our students spend between one and three hours outside each day, depending on the day’s activities and weather. Longer on Friday’s.

Outdoor time is not separate from learning. It is an important part of how children learn best.

More time outdoors gives children opportunities to move their bodies, use their imaginations, explore nature, solve problems, take healthy risks, and build confidence. It also helps improve focus, emotional regulation, physical health, creativity, and cooperation with others.

Children need time to run, climb, investigate, create, and simply play. After having those opportunities, they often return to classroom lessons calmer, more focused, and ready to learn.

Our outdoor time may include free play, nature exploration, gardening, boating, walking local trails, visiting the farm, hands-on science, group games, and adventures within our coastal community.

Strong academics remain an important part of every school day, but we do not believe childhood should be spent sitting at a desk for six hours. We want our students to learn through books, conversations, movement, experiences, and the world around them.

The outdoors are not a break from education. It is part of the education.

We’re gearing up for an exciting new school year at Pogies Academy!

Take a look at what afternoons will look like for our 1st & 2nd graders! Our goal is to make the second half of the school day something kids look forward to, filled with art, music, drama, outdoor exploration, boating, fishing, nature, field trips, and hands on adventures.

At Pogies, we believe some of the best learning happens outside the four walls of a classroom.

Still undecided about where your child will attend school this year? We still have a few openings!
1st & 2nd Grade: 6 spots remaining in our combined class
Kindergarten: Just 1 spot remaining
If you're looking for a small, hands on learning environment where academics are balanced with creativity, nature, and real world experiences, we'd love to talk with you.

Welcome to the team! Meet our new 1st/ 2nd grade teacher.

“Hello, my name is Trae Landy, and I am so excited to teach the first/second grade class here at Pogie’s! This will be my fourth year teaching first grade. I earned my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Behavioral Studies from UNCW. I have been named Global Teacher of the Year twice. I completed LETRS training based on the Science of Reading and am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Instructional Design and Technology at UNCW.

I was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and later graduated from Swansboro, North Carolina. My love for teaching began at a young age. When I am not in the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my husband, our four dogs, and our hedgehog. I also love being outdoors, on the water, and spending time doing photography, cycling, and health and wellness.

I believe every child deserves a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment where they are challenged, supported, and inspired to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Through differentiated instruction, creativity, and meaningful relationships, I strive to help students build confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.
