This week we hosted another Faith Based Leaders' Luncheon to reconnect with our Faith based community. The luncheon started at 11:00am at the O.A. Peay Administrative Offices and after enjoing fellowship over a great lunch and addressing most of the items in our agenda for the day, they previewed the latest progress made on our Mattamuskeet Rising Project. They were all very impressed with the look of the new building, asked many questions and follow ups, and left very excited to let their faith based communities know what's coming soon for the students and staff at Mattamuskeet School.

We enjoy their partnerships and support and cannot wait for the next covening in a couple of months!

Hyde County Schools District Days brought LEAD WELL, LIVE WELL to life as our district theme for this school year by giving staff opportunities to grow professionally, connect with one another, and focus on their own well-being.

Superintendent Shaver reminded us that leadership is not defined by a title. Every HCS employee has the opportunity to lead through service, encouragement, integrity, kindness, resilience, and a belief in every child. Lead Well challenges us to recognize the impact of our everyday interactions and decisions, while Live Well reminds us that caring for ourselves and one another is essential to doing our best work for students.

District Day sessions reflected both sides of that commitment. Staff strengthened their instructional practice through sessions such as Inquiry Based Learning, Understanding by Design, the HCS Instructional Framework, The Link Between Art & Literacy, ESL Strategies for Learning, AI in the Classroom, Growing Green, Using the Glowforge, and Amazing Shake. They also explored tools and systems that support effective classrooms and district operations, including Infinite Campus, Attendance Matters, Incident IQ, Finance Updates, classroom management strategies, Zones of Regulation, and the HCS AI Guidelines.

Just as importantly, staff had opportunities to focus on themselves. Sessions including Meal Prepping, Nourish & Thrive, Sound Bath, Financially Independent Teachers, and “I’m Fine, I’m Fine... and Other Lies We Tell Ourselves” encouraged employees to think intentionally about physical, emotional, and financial wellness.

These Days were also about reconnecting as one HCS team. Sharing time together with lunch generously provided by the Hyde County Board of Education gave employees a chance to reconnect, recharge, and prepare to welcome students for the 2026–27 school year.

From Mattamuskeet to Ocracoke, our staff is preparing for another year of learning, service, and excellence. As we begin this new school year, we carry a simple but powerful challenge with us in our classrooms, schools, communities, and homes:

Lead Well. Live Well.

On behalf of the Board of Education, Superintendent Shaver and all of your district staff at the Administrative Offices, we wish our schools a successful and productive school year. We are here to support you!

As we wrap up our Central Office Department/Team Spotlight Series, we’re excited to introduce the Exceptional Children & Human Resources team whose work centers on two of Hyde County Schools’ greatest priorities... our people and our students.

The Exceptional Children & Human Resources Department works to recruit, develop, and support talented staff across Hyde County Schools while helping ensure students with disabilities receive the individualized services and support they need to thrive.

ALLISON ETHERIDGE | EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN'S & HUMAN RESOURCES DIRECTOR

Allison is beginning her 23rd year with Hyde County Schools. Her career has included 11 years as an elementary classroom teacher and 11 years as a school administrator before moving into her current leadership role.

“For me, education has never been just a job, it has always been about people.”

Whether advocating for students with exceptional needs, supporting families and educators, or recruiting and retaining great staff, Allison remains motivated by the opportunity to make a difference. After 23 years, she still believes deeply in the power of a great teacher, a supportive school, and an adult who refuses to give up on a child.

ADRIANE MARSHALL | HR, EC, & BT ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

Adriane’s connection to Hyde County Schools includes previous full-time service, many years as a substitute, and now six months in her current position.

“Working for Hyde County Schools is more than a job to me...it is an opportunity to give back to the community that has shaped my life.”

For Adriane, supporting our educators means ultimately supporting the students and families they serve and by helping build a brighter future for Hyde County.

KATIE O'NEAL BROWN | SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST

Katie is beginning her 7th year with Hyde County Schools and brings a special connection to our district as a graduate of Ocracoke School! After serving for six years as the Exceptional Children’s teacher at Ocracoke School, she is returning in a new role as School Psychologist.

“I am excited to be returning home to support students, families, and school communities in this new role.”

SOPHIA AUSBERGER | OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST

Sophia is joining Hyde County Schools as our Occupational Therapist, bringing face-to-face occupational therapy services to the district for the first time in many years.

“I chose Hyde County Schools because of the tight-knit, intentional communities surrounding each school.”

Sophia is excited to work directly alongside children and families, helping students develop skills, overcome challenges, and reach their individual goals.

HYDE COUNTY SCHOOLS OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT

It takes a dedicated team working behind the scenes every day to make sure our schools are safe, welcoming, and ready for learning. From maintaining our facilities and keeping our buses on the road to solving the unexpected problems that come with operating a school district, our Operations Department helps make it possible for our students and staff to succeed.

We’re excited to introduce you to the people who keep Hyde County Schools moving!

OPERATION DIRECTOR | JEREMY PHELPS

Serving HCS since March 2023, our Operations Director enjoys bringing efficiency to the everyday work of our district, solving messy problems, and connecting with students and staff. What keeps him motivated? Turning big ideas into smooth, daily reality!

MALINDA HARRIS | ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

Malinda is celebrating an incredible 25 years with Hyde County Schools! She serves as Administrative Assistant for the Operations and Technology Departments as well as the district’s McKinney-Vento Liaison and Foster Care Point of Contact. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Hyde County Education Foundation.

A Hyde County native and proud 1988 Mattamuskeet High School graduate, Malinda is grateful for the opportunity to give back to the community and school system that helped shape her. She especially values being able to encourage and support the students of both Mattamuskeet and Ocracoke. Outside of work, Malinda enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, and baking.

CHRIS MOORE | MAINTENANCE

Chris has been part of the HCS family for five years. As a maintenance worker, he enjoys the variety that comes with tackling multiple tasks and projects and, most importantly, being part of our school family. Whether it’s a routine repair or an unexpected challenge, Chris helps keep our facilities ready for students and staff.

TYLER WILLIAMS | TRANSPORTATION MECHANIC

Tyler has been with Hyde County Schools for almost two years, helping ensure our district vehicles are safe and ready to roll. Tyler shares that he is with HCS because he knows God has placed him here for this season of his life, and we are thankful to have his skills and dedication on our team.

JOEL JEFFERY | TRANSPORTATION MECHANIC

Our newest addition to the Transportation team, Joel has been with HCS for about four months. Originally from Pennsylvania, Joel previously worked at NAPA in Engelhard. He hopes his work at HCS can do more than keep our fleet running as he also wants to inspire a new generation to explore the trades and consider careers as mechanics.

Our Operations team may do much of its work behind the scenes, but its impact is visible across Hyde County Schools every single day.

CARA EQUILS | DEAN OF HYDE ACADEMY & CAREER DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR | 6 YEARS

For Cara, Hyde County Schools is special because of the relationships that make a small school system feel like family.

For Paige, serving Hyde County is personal. A Mattamuskeet graduate herself, she has spent nearly three decades giving back to the community that helped shape her.

“I have a lifelong passion for supporting the youth of Hyde County. Having grown up here and graduated from Mattamuskeet, I have a love that runs deep for this community and our Laker Family. There’s nothing more rewarding than giving back to the community and people who shaped me as a person.”

JEANNIE OWENS | PRINCIPAL OF OCRACOKE SCHOOL | 11 YEARS

Since joining Ocracoke School in 2015 as a fourth-grade teacher, Jeannie has served as a fifth-grade teacher, Dean of Students, Assistant Principal, and now Principal. Through each role, Ocracoke School and the island community have become home.

Jeannie believes deeply in creating a school where students are challenged, supported, known, valued, and loved, and where there is joy along the way. Her passion for educating the whole child, giving students voice and ownership in their learning, and helping young people discover who they are and what they are capable of is at the heart of her leadership.

“Education matters because we have the opportunity not only to teach children, but to help shape how they see themselves and their place in the world. That is why this work matters so deeply to me, and why I am so proud to serve and love Ocracoke School and this remarkable community.”

From Hyde Academy to Mattamuskeet to Ocracoke, these leaders remind us that leadership in Hyde County Schools is about much more than a title. It’s about knowing our students, loving our communities, believing in what is possible, and working every day to create opportunities for every child.
