Student Spotlight: Jenna Audlin '29

Meet Jenna (they/she), a recent transfer from Hampshire College who is majoring in Environmental Education and Outdoor Business. Jenna is the author and creator of "The Explore More Challenge," a series of outdoor activity books designed for young explorers and their families.

Jenna is part of the Sustainability Crew, working at the Free Store, and is a member of Ecoteam, an environmental educational program that teaches lessons at local elementary schools. In their free time, Jenna enjoys collaging at the Craft Kingdom and studying Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths). You might even find Jenna catching and tagging Monarch butterflies around campus!

“There are many schools that have environmental education programs, but Warren Wilson’s is really immersive; there are a lot of opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom.”

Currently, Jenna is working on their 4th place-based activity book, focusing on Swannanoa and the surrounding region.

Senior Sophia Spangler is back on campus after spending her spring semester studying Wildlife Conservation and Political Ecology in Tanzania.

Sophia studied in partnership with Sokoine University of Agriculture through the School for International Training (SIT), a study abroad partner. Sophia is a senior on the Admissions Crew, majoring in Conservation Biology.

Celebrate the arrival of fall with us this weekend at WWC!

October 2-4 is Family & Homecoming weekend, and we’re excited to welcome folks to campus, whether it’s their first or hundredth time!

Some of this weekend's events include an amazing Bluegrass act, Sister Sadie with alum Rainy Miatke, a women’s volleyball game, Fall Fest, an Ecstatic Dance Party, and a Potluck at the Warren Wilson Presbyterian Church.

The events mentioned are open to EVERYONE! So come and have some fun this weekend, October 2-4!

A little over two years ago, Hurricane Helene passed through Western North Carolina, leaving devastation in its wake.

Watch as senior Maeve Williams shares her experience living through Hurricane Helene.

Helene damaged 46 buildings and 45 roofs, flooded 235 acres, and crippled 14 miles of public trails on Warren Wilson campus. Power wasn’t restored for two weeks, and potable water didn’t flow until 45 days after the storm.

Student Spotlight: Lureida Torres Benn '28

Meet Lureida (they/them), a junior majoring in Biology who interned in the vertebrate paleontology department at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) for 10 weeks this summer in NYC. There, they studied an early tetrapod.

Lureida was one of the 3% of applicants who were accepted for this Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) through the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Lureida is part of the Archaeology Crew, specializing in animal osteology. Outside of their time in the sciences, they are part of the Latinx/e Student Collective (LSC) and the Black Student Union (BSU). Not only that, Lureida keeps their hands busy as a student-athlete, playing lacrosse.

"The way we do presentations at Warren Wilson helped me when I was presenting at my symposium," Lureida said. "I had more skills in how to talk to people and present my work.”

Currently, Lureida is writing about their findings at the AMNH and will submit their work for publication in January.

One piece of advice Lureida has is to never make assumptions, both in life and in research.

It's almost time for early voting! 🗳

Preparations for midterm elections are in full swing at Warren Wilson, with workshops, shuttles, and parties planned over the next six weeks.

Yesterday, for National Voter Registration Day, we welcomed You Can Vote to campus, an event orchestrated by Assistant Director of Community & Global Engagement, Taelyn Reid. The training focused on teaching students how to educate and mobilize WWC for this upcoming election.

We are proud to announce that Reid secured a $1,000 grant from All Civic Nation to host a Party to the Polls at WWC in October.
