One week down... and we're making history. ✨

Spark students have officially completed their very first week of school! We’re still gathering the moments that capture this beginning, but these groundbreaking photos remind us of the bigger story unfolding.

Last week's groundbreaking marked the beginning of something we’ve been dreaming about for a long time... a new kind of learning community, built around flexibility, creativity, connection, and the belief that there’s more than one way to do school.

One historic week is in the books.

Meet new Spark and ArtSpace families, reconnect with old friends, and enjoy a relaxing summer afternoon together before school begins. Bring your own picnic or your favorite snacks if you'd like. There's no agenda - just time to visit, play, and enjoy each other's company.

Meet our new math teacher!

Originally from New York, Ben earned his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the University of Rochester, and his Master's Degree in Teaching from Western Carolina University. He has been working with diverse learners in North Carolina for over 20 years across experiential, traditional, therapeutic and virtual settings.

Ben believes that effective teaching begins with building meaningful and trusting relationships with students, in meeting students where they are at, and that students learn best when optimally challenged and holistically supported.

He is thrilled to be a part of Spark Learning Center in its inaugural year. During his free time, Ben enjoys reading science fiction, playing the piano, and spending time with his pup, River.

We are excited to introduce our new Spark Program Director - Lucy Sawyer!

Since joining ArtSpace in 2010, she has been a dedicated leader and educator, bringing with her more than 30 years of experience in education. With a strong background in special education and many years of service as ArtSpace's Middle School Director, she brings administrative expertise and a deep commitment to student success. When she’s not at school, she enjoys spending time outdoors and enjoying nature .

We are thrilled to have her leading this exciting new chapter for our middle school students and families!
