We are thrilled to announce the 2023 Common Ground Country Fair poster! This year's artwork by Rebekah Lowell is titled “Monarchs and Milkweed.” With the monarch butterfly population declining due to habitat loss, the message of “Monarchs and Milkweed” is a timely and fitting selection for MOFGA’s annual celebration of rural living.

Dear Followers of Our Sustainable Life…. It has been quite a ride these past two years since the pandemic changed all of our lives. Some things for the better, some things for the worse, but no matter how you see it, our worlds keep turning.

Our Sustainable Life has closed it’s doors, but even as one door closes, another opens. I still truly believe that in order to create a socially, environmentally, and equal world, the systems currently in place must change.

To continue to do this important work is very important to me, and so with that in mind, I invite you all to join me and some other like-minded people in growing a community that envisions a life as I described above - A socially and environmentally just world that emphasizes stewardship and care for the world. Panicked that your child is falling behind, that their learning is not rigorous enough, that they need to maintain a competitive edge?

Take a deep breath.

Remember what children really need and how they really learn.

Posted • The research on early childhood education is pretty clear these days. Kids need free time to play and explore. They room to run and access to nature. They need someone to show them the wonders of good books.

Unfortunately this knowledge has been lost on much of our culture, at least the adults. Kids have an innate need for the items on the first list, but parents are often running themselves ragged trying to get their kids to do the items on the second list. When the kids resist, the parents feel like failures. That stress is the last thing families today need.

We need a cultural shift that prioritizes the first list above the second. This doesn’t mean we have to eliminate all the items on list two. Some kids enjoy circle time. Some thrive on a busy schedule. Some even enjoy worksheets. The goal isn’t to turn every kid into a homesteading organic farmer who never touches a pencil. It’s to give families the freedom to carve out the lives we want, free from the pressures that don’t serve us.
