I couldn’t be prouder of our newest brown belts! 🟫

After a grueling 4-hour test, Tessa and Kiersten have earned their Sankyu and John D. has earned his Ikkyu (the last belt before black belt!). They all performed incredibly well, handling several curveballs and leaving it all on the mats. I can’t wait to see what you all do as you grow into your new ranks - congratulations!!! 🥋🎉

A week ago, we had a weekend full of great karate! After Saturday classes, we hosted Soke Paul Parent for a training event with advanced students and instructors from Zanshin Kenjutsu in Billerica, NCK Plainville, and NCK Sutton. Zanshin Kenjutsu Kenpo Karate NCK PLAINVILLE We practiced practical defensive techniques against knife attacks until sweat was coming down the walls! Now, I just need to remember to pause the fun and take pictures next time!

Then, on Sunday morning, Kiersten, Frank, and Emily represented NCK Sutton at the Krane Fall Classic Karate Championship in Warwick, RI. KRANE Ratings Inc. They all performed incredibly well, taking home a slew of 1st and 2nd place trophies and cementing their position in the 2026 Krane standings!

Another year, another amazing seminar led by Professor Eugene Sedeño! It’s always a great time when Sifu Matt and I get to beat each other up for a few hours. When we get to do it with with a room full of serious Kenpo practitioners and at the instruction of a living legend, it’s even better!

Nick Cerio’s Kenpo showed up in force at the annual IKCG Banquet this weekend! Three black belt competitors from NCK Plainville were crowned World Champions in Forms, Weapons, and Fighting, respectively, and both Kyoshi Smith and I received incredible surprises. Kyoshi was presented with the Nick Cerio Legacy Award and I was humbled to receive the George Pesare Legacy Award, each for our commitments to the martial arts. I can’t begin to convey how moving it was to be honored like this in front of such an incredible group of martial artists. SGM George Pesare and Professor Nick Cerio were two of the most impactful martial artists in New England. They laid the foundation for what we teach and how we conduct ourselves as Kenpo practitioners. I am truly privileged to carry on their distinguished legacy and share it with all of you.

Tournament veterans and first-time competitors stepped onto the floor, gave it their all, and took home medals in all categories. I couldn’t be prouder of all your hard work and dedication! Well done John M., Nij, Kelli, Rory, Emily, Tessa, Kiersten, Frank, and Rose!!!

Wednesday night we had the incredible honor of welcoming Senior Grandmaster Steve Nugent Steve Nugent’s Karate Institute into our dojo to teach a seminar on point fighting. Bringing a wealth of knowledge from decades of experience, SGM Nugent led our students through some challenging drills and pushed each and every one of them to kick higher, strike faster, and move more efficiently. Now it’s our job to work those drills, improve our flexibility, and make the most of the lessons learned. 🥋

I can’t wait to see some refined combinations put to use on the competition floor in the fall! Next stop is SGM’s own tournament - the IKCG Karate Tournament International Kenpo Council of Grandmasters on Saturday, September 12! 🏆

This weekend, a small contingent of NCK Sutton competitors stormed the Krane Summer Tournament and came away with a slew of 1st and 2nd place trophies! Everyone performed incredibly well and earned a new trophy for the mantle. More than the hardware, this weekend showed proof of the hard work and continued efforts of our team despite these hot summer weeks. I couldn’t be prouder! Well done Kelli, Kiersten, Win, and Perry! 🥋🎉

This weekend marked a major accomplishment for two students from NCK Sutton. After a long and grueling test, Shodan John and Shodan Tim earned their black belts, taking a huge step in their martial arts journey.

For many, the black belt seems like the final goal when they take their first steps on this path, but as these two now know, it is really just the beginning. They’ve earned the right to take their martial arts to new levels, to experiment with techniques that they’ve practiced for years, and to make their martial arts fit their strengths, compensate for their weaknesses, and adapt to their individual bodies.

Congratulations to both of you for this momentous achievement! I am immensely excited to continue teaching you and to begin helping you find the “art” in martial arts. Congratulations also go to Sensei Scott and Jr. Nidan Keert from NCK Plainville, who both earned new rank and performed exceptionally well alongside Shodans Tim and John. Well done to you all!!!
