Suite Eire No 3 Suite Caledonia, Loch Lomond 05/17/2024

Ok, I think I got the mix correct for this, but I admit I didn’t listen through my studio monitors. If there are major balance issues I’ll re-do it.

This piece took much longer to write, including soliciting and receiving amazing assistance from a harpist for the harp part, which I think is now playable.
It also was more serious in content, and I really tried to bring the gravity to the source material.
Loch Lomond is from the perspective of a dead soldier, who takes the “low road” home to Scotland. The Last March is the middle “breakdown” tune, continuing the marching motif, and The Minstrel Boy is the 3rd melody (not necessarily in that order), with further poignant source material.

Something I composed recently. Hopefully it’s the final version. The Last Minute, for Concert Band. The theme and some of the motifs are from a college assignment long ago, but most of this is new.

Haha, dug out my ancient composition files. This predates my deeper understanding of music theory, obviously. I was maybe 15 when I wrote it? Titled “splotch”. I loved the sound of bassoon.

Basic instrument repair is an essential skill for music educators. Geology, spatial reasoning, eyeballing the dimensions.

Been practicing Horn pretty consistently for a couple years. It’s one of those niche sort of instruments that’s really hard to get to sound right and is not forgiving at all when you get it wrong. That said it’s a fun (masochistic) sort of personal growth project. The eventual goal is to take this Mozart concerto in D and record myself playing all the orchestral parts and the horn solo. Maybe by my 40th birthday?
