When a secondary asks whether you want a specialized pathway, rural health, global health, research, a lot of applicants assume checking one gives them an edge. Former admissions director Kristen Anderson, MSW, and Dr. Scott Wright say picking a track you don't actually want is the real mistake. You don't want to spend four years pretending to be someone you're not.

Premed Happy Hour happens every Thursday at 8PM ET. Join us live on YouTube with Dr. Wright for honest, transparent conversations about medical school admissions. Submit your anonymous questions and learn what admissions committees are really looking for.

Most interview prep is a list of tips you read once and forget by the next day. This one works differently. You'll watch an actual mock interview happen live, with feedback given in the moment on what worked and what fell flat.

In this FREE medical school workshop, August 10 at 6:00 PM ET, we'll go through common questions, tough scenarios, and the small habits that make or break an answer. You'll leave knowing how to sound clear and like yourself instead of rehearsed.

Most premeds treat medical school websites as the final word on eligibility. For an international applicant, they're barely a starting point. Ore's list started at more than twenty schools. Then she did the thing most people are too intimidated to try…

Hear how Ore built her school list from scratch and went three for three on this episode of The Premed Years Podcast. Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or watch the full episode on YouTube .

Diagnosed with a brain tumor at 9, then again seven years later with 8 more. Antony Alvarado is now an MS3 in the UCLA and Charles R. Drew University Medical Education Program, and he's turned his cancer survivorship into a way to mentor other patients, and now into the kind of doctor who can look someone in the eye and say he's been where they are.

Watch Episode 36 of The Med School Years Podcast for Antony's story of survivorship and becoming the doctor he needed on our YouTube channel !

Ore's application cycle fell apart at the worst possible time. She had no US prereqs, no premed advisor who understood her path, and only about ten schools she was even eligible to apply to.

She applied anyway. Her secondaries went in on the deadline, the one thing every premed is warned against. Then the invites came, and she went three for three!

This conversation is from the newest episode of The Premed Years Podcast. Catch the full breakdown on YouTube at Medical School Headquarters or listen on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

When a school asks that open-ended "is there anything else you'd like us to know" question, a lot of applicants reach for their strongest connection to the school, family who went there, deep roots in the area, a name the committee might recognize. Former admissions directors Dr. Scott Wright and Kristen Anderson say that instinct usually backfires.

Join us on YouTube every Thursday at 8PM ET with Dr. Wright and special guests for honest conversations about the medical school application process. Watch the full episode of Getting It Wright: Premed Happy Hour on YouTube .

If you're still in college taking classes, this next academic year is where your application actually gets built. Not senior year, not the summer before you apply. The GPA, the clinical hours, the MCAT foundation all come from the choices you make over the next nine months.

In this FREE workshop, August 17 at 6:00 PM ET, we'll map out how to balance your coursework, build experiences that actually matter, start laying MCAT groundwork, and sidestep the mistakes that cost premeds a cycle. You'll leave with a clear roadmap for the year.

Jen Reinmuth-Birch, DO, fell in love with every rotation she did, and her advisor pointed out the obvious: in rural family medicine, you don't have to choose. You work the clinic and the hospital, deliver babies, do home visits, and become the one constant for patients who are used to being bounced from specialist to specialist. And when it came to Match Day, she wasn't anxious, because she believes the algorithm sends you exactly where you're meant to be.

Secondary season is where the mental spiral usually starts. Thirty prompts in the queue, every one asking you to sound thoughtful and specific, and no clear signal that you are doing any of it right.

Last week Dr. Scott Wright sat down with Kristen Anderson, MSW, to sort out the calls that quietly cost people points: when a short answer is finished versus lazy, why picking a track you do not actually want backfires, and how much the two-week turnaround rule really matters once you are behind on it.
