Congratulations to Bethlehem Bekele, who goes by Betty, on winning 2nd place at the APEE Undergraduate Research Competition in Las Vegas yesterday!!! We are beyond thrilled with Betty, who competed with over 40 other undergraduates from across the country.

Betty's work focuses on the relationship between international student populations and overall immigrant populations on startup rates. She finds that while overall immigrant populations are highly corelated with more startups per capita, the same is not true for international student populations. Betty points a likely reason for this counterintuitive result is that international college students are mobile and may not stay in the state in which they study. Check out her poster below:

There are big changes happening in the UW-Superior Econ program soon.

This semester will be Dr. Joshua Bedi's last semester at UW-S. He will be starting an exciting new position at as an Assistant Professor of Economics at Texas Woman's University next semester!

While we are sad to see Dr. Bedi leave us, we wish him all the best. He will miss his UW-S students profoundly, but Economics teaches us that the beauty of innovation is that despite large geographic distances, we are all really just an email away.

Israel Kirzner is a pioneer in the study of entrepreneurship. While Joseph Schumpeter emphasized creative destruction and the disequilibrating tendencies of entrepreneurship, Kirzner emphasized how entrepreneurs bring us closer to equilibrium. Join us in wishing him a happy birthday!
