The US Department of Health and Human Services proposed major changes to the Head Start Performance Standards - changes that could affect teacher quality, disability services, family engagement, health supports, and more for programs like ours.

Do you disagree with these proposed changes? Together for Head Start has drafted a joint letter urging HHS to withdraw this proposal. Signing takes 2 minutes - staff, parents, grandparents, and caregivers of children currently enrolled in Head Start can add their name by September 25, 2026.

📣The Federal Administration has officially proposed major changes to Head Start, which will negatively affect families and children throughout the country. Visit WHSA or NHSA to learn more.📣

The Trump Administration has officially proposed significant changes to Head Start -including eliminating classroom ratio and group size requirements, and rolling back standards for children with disabilities, multilingual learners, and family services.

WHSA Executive Director Jennie Mauer spoke with Wisconsin Public Radio about what's at stake: "These standards define what children and families receive in Head Start programs, including classroom quality, teacher qualifications, health services, developmental screenings, disability supports, multilingual learner supports and family engagement requirements."

The public now has 60 days to weigh in before the rule takes effect. As Mauer put it: "The path to serving more children isn't cutting quality. The path to serving more children is to adequately fund the program."
