👉 Starting April 4, 2025, USCIS will only accept this version—so double-check before you file!
⚠️ Important change: The new form removes the option for a gender identity other than male or female. Now, you’ll only see “female” or “male” as choices.

The naturalization process is a marathon, not a sprint.⏰ 🏃♀ Between paperwork, tests, interviews, and waiting, it’s a journey that takes serious dedication.
But how long does it ACTUALLY take in your state?
🗓️ Timelines can vary a lot. Your local USCIS office’s workload, where you live, and whether USCIS needs extra docs from you can all speed things up or slow them down.
On average, it takes 8–12 months from the day you hit “submit” on your application to holding that naturalization certificate in your hands.
Want a better idea of what to expect in your state?
Join local Facebook or Reddit groups for applicants—people often share their real-time experiences there.
And if you’re craving a clear breakdown of each step (think: biometrics, interview, oath ceremony), we’ve got a timeline estimate on our blog.

Applying for citizenship? 👉 Take a moment to dive into Part 9 of Form N-400, it's the longest section! 📄✍️
During your interview day, a USCIS officer will ask you these questions, maybe even all 37 from Part 9.
They are known as the “Have you ever” questions because most of them start that way, or “Yes or No” questions, because you have to answer them with yes or no. ✅️❌️
Here are some of them:
- Have you EVER claimed to be a U.S. citizen (in writing or any other way)?
- Have you EVER registered to vote or voted in any Federal, state, or local election in the United
States?
- Do you currently owe any overdue Federal, state, or local taxes in the United States?
- Have you EVER served in, been a member of, assisted (helped), or participated in any military or
police unit?
- Have you EVER given any U.S. Government officials any information or documentation that was false, fraudulent, or misleading?
Get ready for your interview by thoroughly reviewing this section of your N-400 form and making sure you know all your answers. Be prepared!
