Belonging Before Achievement

“Who helped you feel welcome?”

That’s the kind of question our students may encounter during a bilingual Morning Meeting.

Why ask it?

Because belonging isn’t simply a nice feeling. Children who know their voice matters are better prepared to participate, take intellectual risks, ask questions, make mistakes, and learn alongside others.

Our Morning Meetings intentionally give every student opportunities to speak, listen, collaborate, reflect, and contribute to the classroom community.

One day students may explore what inclusion looks like. Another day they may talk about different strengths, family traditions, home languages, or how mistakes help us learn.

Chacun a sa place. Everyone belongs.

For a school community representing many languages, nationalities, and experiences, learning how to understand another person’s perspective is part of the education itself. Our morning meetings make this intentional learning.

Before children can tackle a challenging math problem, contribute thoughtfully to a discussion, or persevere through a difficult assignment, they need another set of skills: the ability to notice what is happening inside themselves and choose what to do next.

That’s why self-regulation is part of learning at FASSV.

During Morning Meetings, students practice pausing, reflecting, identifying strategies, setting goals, and thinking about the choices they will make throughout the day.

Sometimes a closing is as simple as one deep breath. Sometimes students finish the sentence, “Today I will…” Other times they reflect on a strategy that helped them work through a challenge.

Over time, these small moments help children develop self-awareness and self-management, two of the core competencies in the CASEL framework and in the new French Ministry of Education framework regarding social emotional learning. In this picture, our teachers, teachers assistants and staff were adding to their toolbox with new strategies for morning meeting and teaching SEL. We are proud of our year long partnership with the Institute for Social Emotional Learning who will support not only our teachers, but our parents in this learning as well.

At FASSV, academic rigor and personal growth aren’t competing priorities. They strengthen one another.

How We Begin Matters

How a child begins the school day matters.

At FASSV, Morning Meetings help students start with connection, purpose, and a sense of belonging, in both French and English.

Students might greet one another, respond to a question, practice listening to a classmate, participate in a collaborative activity, and finish by setting an intention for the day.

These simple routines build important Social Emotional Learning skills: recognizing emotions, managing reactions, listening with empathy, working with others, and making thoughtful choices.

And because this happens in a bilingual classroom, students are learning more than the vocabulary of two languages. They are learning how to express ideas, emotions, appreciation, disagreement, and empathy across languages and cultures.

Bonjour. Good morning. Every voice belongs here.

We have some back-to-school reading for the parents this time.

FASSV is featured in Bay Area Parent with “The Bilingual Advantage,” an article exploring what research tells us about children growing up with two languages.

One of the things we love about the article is that it goes beyond the obvious benefit of being able to communicate in French and English.

Bilingualism is also about learning to shift perspectives, listen carefully, solve problems in different ways, and feel comfortable moving between cultures.

The article also explores research around focus, reading, empathy, and belonging.

Those are some of the reasons our 50/50 model matters so much to us. We’re not simply teaching children another language. We’re helping them develop another way of seeing the world.

Keep an eye out for the Back to School issue of Bay Area Parent!

August 17 is almost here, and one of our favorite moments of the year is just around the corner: welcoming our teachers back to campus. We can't wait to welcome them back NEXT WEEK!

Our faculty brings together different languages, cultures, educational traditions, and professional experiences, but they share something important: a deep commitment to helping children grow.

At FASSV, teachers work across French and American educational approaches to create classrooms where students are encouraged to be curious, independent, thoughtful, and confident. That collaboration is at the heart of our 50/50 bilingual model.

Next week begins the conversations, planning, preparation, and collaboration that will shape the year ahead.

Bienvenue à nos enseignants. We’re so happy to have you back.

It was a pleasure to welcome Madame Valérie Brisset, Consul General of France in San Francisco, and members of the French Consulate to the French American School of Silicon Valley.

Visits like these are an important reminder of the strength of the partnership between France and our school. We were proud to share our classrooms, meet with our students and teachers, and showcase the bilingual, bicultural education that our community is so passionate about.

Thank you, Madame Brisset, for taking the time to visit FASSV and for your commitment to supporting French education abroad. We are grateful for your partnership and look forward to continuing our work together to help students become confident bilingual learners and engaged global citizens.

Merci beaucoup pour votre visite. À très bientôt!

Today we closed a beautiful chapter at FASSV.

After 25 years, Martine Trusz walked out of our school for the last time.

She has been a teacher, curriculum leader, Assistant Head of School, and Head of School. She has given so much of herself to this community over the years.

What made today unforgettable wasn’t a speech or a ceremony.

It was the children.

As she headed for the door, they surrounded her. Hug after hug after hug. They simply didn’t want to let her go.

You can’t manufacture moments like this. Children always know who has loved them well.

Twenty-five years at one school is extraordinary. Twenty-five years of loving children with your whole heart is even more extraordinary.

Thank you, Martine, for everything you’ve given to generations of students, families, and colleagues. Your legacy will live on in every child whose life you touched.

Some goodbyes are hard because they are filled with so much love. ❤️
