Life with puppies is puppy kisses, little paws following you around, and trying to get things done with somebody chewing on your shoelace. 😂🐾

We raised these little ones, watched their personalities come out, and fell in love with each of them along the way. There was plenty of cleaning up, but also plenty of stopping what we were doing because a puppy needed a cuddle. Obviously. 🤍

Then comes the bittersweet part: sending them off to good homes. You miss their little faces and all the commotion, but you love knowing they have families who get to fall in love with them, too.

They were part of our everyday life for a little while. Now they get to be part of someone else’s for years to come. 🐶

We finally went to the pumpkin patch.

We wandered through the vines, looked at all the pumpkins, found our white pumpkin, and brought it home. And honestly? I figured out why I had never been that excited about pumpkin patches before.

A pumpkin patch is not like a corn maze. The corn maze is the activity. The pumpkin patch is more like the beginning of something else. You go because you are going to decorate with the pumpkin, carve it, bake with it, or bring a little fall home with you.

So this was our pumpkin patch story: we went, we found the pumpkin, and the real story started when we brought it home.

Are you taking your kiddos to the corn maze this year?

We walked into the corn maze completely confident. Yeah... that turned into a bit longer than we thought it would. 😂🤣😅

We got turned around, followed the kid who swore she knew the way, and somehow ended up laughing right back where we started. 😂

And that is the part I want to remember.

Not just the smiling picture at the entrance—but the confusion, the tiny leader confidently marching ahead, and the little stamp that proved we eventually made it out.

That is what The Storytelling Method does. It helps you photograph the pieces that make the memory feel complete:

Where were we?
What were we doing?
What little detail will bring this day back?

One wide photo. One mid photo. One detail.

You can always take more, but a small intentional set can tell the whole story—and someday become an album instead of staying lost among 50 nearly identical pictures in your camera roll.

Save this for your next family adventure. 🤎

A few things to think about before you book your session this fall.

Where would you like your story told? How would you like your story told? And why are we telling your story at this time, at this place?

I might get back into senior photography after this one… 🤍

Funny thing is, she isn’t a senior. 😂

Mariliis is 24, from Tallinn, Estonia, and spent her summer here in the U.S. working with Southwestern Advantage while finishing her law education.

And I met her because she knocked on my front door selling educational books.

One conversation turned into another, and before I knew it, we were talking about school, homeschooling, Estonia, law, life, and everything that had brought her all the way to Wyoming.

Somewhere in that conversation, I just knew I wanted to photograph her.

So one smoky summer morning, we headed down to Sundance Creek, WY. I loaned her my cowgirl boots, we wandered around the water, laughed a lot, and eventually she walked straight into the creek. 😂

This session reminded me that what I loved about photographing seniors was never really senior year itself.

It was photographing someone in that beautiful in-between season — right in the middle of becoming who they’re going to be.

And maybe… just maybe… I’m not quite finished with senior photography after all. 🤍📸

The full story from our morning at Sundance Creek, WY is now on the blog.

September is the quiet chapter between seasons. 🍂

One evening, the kids are still barefoot in the grass, asking for five more minutes outside.

The next, you’re reaching for sweaters, wrapping little shoulders in blankets, and noticing the sun setting earlier.

Don’t let that changing-over disappear unnoticed.

You don’t need to complete 31 fall activities or arrange a picture-perfect family adventure. Choose one ordinary September evening and photograph the story already happening:

📷 One Wide photo to show where you are
📷 One Mid photo to show what your family is doing
📷 One Detail photo of the little thing you’ll want to remember

Photograph the last warm goodbye—or the first cozy hello.

Three photographs are enough to preserve what September felt like in your family.

Which are you noticing at your house right now: the last pieces of summer or the first signs of fall? 🍁

Somewhere between the first rainbow handprint and Mom and Dad painting each other’s faces, this stopped feeling like a photo session and simply became a family having fun together. 🤍

What I loved most was that no one stayed on the sidelines. Mom and Dad didn’t just help their little ones make a memory; they stepped right into the middle of it. They painted with their babies, laughed with each other, and gave themselves permission to play, too.

Someday, their children will look back and see more than what their family looked like at this age. They’ll see the way Mom and Dad laughed together. They’ll see how little their own hands once were. They’ll see the joy, the closeness, and probably wonder whose idea it was to put paint on everyone’s face. 😂

The finished canvas holds their handprints, but these photographs hold the part I never want them to forget: what it felt like to be loved inside this family.

This is the memory they created together. 🤍🎨

If the boys brought speed, these girls brought a plan: Why limit the painting to brushes when you have perfectly good hands and feet? 😂

They didn’t paint their shirts nearly as much, but their hands quickly became paintbrushes, their feet became stamps, and before long, they were completely absorbed in making their masterpiece.

This session was rowdy in its own wonderful way—little hands reaching for more paint, bare feet stepping into color, and Momma right there letting them explore, create, and make the kind of mess they would remember.

These photographs aren’t only about what their artwork looked like when they finished. They hold the feeling of making it—the squishy paint between their fingers, the colorful bottoms of their feet, and the freedom of being told, “Yes, you really can get messy.”

Girl energy was never quieter. It was just a different kind of colorful. 🤍🎨

This session started with paintbrushes aimed at the canvas.

It did not stay that way for long. 😂

With three boys, one baby sister, two parents, and plenty of paint within reach, this session moved FAST. There was painting, laughing, reaching over one another, decorating Dad, painting Mom, and absolutely no concern for keeping those white shirts white.

And honestly? That was the whole point.

A family photograph doesn’t always need everyone sitting still, looking at the camera, and smiling at the exact same time. Sometimes the photograph should feel like the family—and this family felt joyful, busy, playful, and full of boy energy.

They didn’t just leave with beautiful photographs. They left wearing the evidence of how much fun they had making them.

This is exactly what Painting Outside the Lines was meant to be. 🤍🎨

One of my favorite parts of this session was watching this momma simply enjoy her little girl helping her paint, holding her close, and letting the mess happen.

Yes, this is a professional photograph. The light is beautiful, the colors are bright, and the moment was thoughtfully captured. But what makes it matter isn’t that it’s “picture perfect.” It’s that Momma is in the frame.

Someday, Miley won’t remember every detail of this afternoon. But she’ll be able to look back and see how her mom held her, played with her, and stepped right into her colorful little world.
