This is one of the lessons that came out of this mornings class. If you evade their first attack and do something do disengage - and that "thing" is something they've never seen, encountered, or had to deal with before...
..it's quite likely that your attacker is going to be a little lesson certain when they decide to make their next move, because they don't know what else is waiting for them on the other end of their attack.

This is also one of the psychological reasons for the lesson in the scrolls which says: 'Always meet you enemy with a smile on your face.'

MAKE EVERY STRIKE CREATE AN ADVANTAGE

Most martial artists are taught to aim at targets.

Hit the arm here. Strike the neck there. Follow with the next movement in the kata.

But what happens when you change where you strike the arm?

What happens when you change the direction and angle through that point?

And, more importantly...

What did that change make happen to HIM?

That's what we're physically exploring in today's Friday Warrior-Protector Masterclass. We go LIVE at 6PM eastern.

Using the opening movements of Gyokko-Ryū's Koku as our laboratory, we'll experiment with:

▶ Different striking points
▶ Different Happō vectors
▶ The effects they create on uke's movement and structure
▶ The opportunities those effects make available NEXT

For the developing student, the challenge is:

EXPLORE → RECOGNIZE → EXPLOIT

Don't force the follow-up you wanted.

Recognize what your strike actually created and use what's available.

For more advanced students, we'll begin moving toward another question:

Can you “call your shot?”

Can your experience with different points, vectors and body relationships allow you to anticipate where uke is likely to be—and eventually influence the conditions that make the opportunity you want more probable?

There are no guarantees.

But experience can make you increasingly capable of recognizing and influencing the probabilities.
