Big Walnut Rolls Past Dublin Coffman, 39-7, Improves to 2-0
SUNBURY — Big Walnut made a statement Friday night.
The Division II Golden Eagles erupted for 22 points in the opening quarter, built a 36-0 halftime lead and dominated on both sides of the football in a 39-7 victory over Dublin Coffman. The win moves Big Walnut to 2-0 on the season.
The Golden Eagles were powered by a huge performance from Nolan Buirley, who rushed 17 times for 248 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 14.6 yards per carry. His night included a 71-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. Big Walnut piled up 319 rushing yards while averaging nearly 10 yards per carry.
Quarterback Eli Stumpf was equally efficient, completing 11 of 16 passes for 131 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Jackson Bowers caught four passes for 52 yards and a touchdown, while Gavin Harrington finished with four catches for 42 yards and another score.
Big Walnut took control almost immediately. Stumpf found Bowers for an 18-yard touchdown with 7:19 remaining in the opening quarter and later connected with Harrington for a 12-yard score. Buirley added an 11-yard touchdown run to give the Golden Eagles a commanding 22-0 advantage after one quarter.
Buirley then delivered the biggest play of the night, breaking free for a 71-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. His third touchdown, a 3-yard run with 3:23 remaining before halftime, stretched the lead to 36-0.
Owen Pyles added a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter as Big Walnut pushed its advantage to 39-0. Dublin Coffman's only points came on Jack Morris' 3-yard touchdown run with 1:56 remaining.
The Golden Eagles' defense was every bit as impressive as the offense. Big Walnut limited Coffman to just 134 yards of total offense and 57 rushing yards, while holding a 450-134 advantage in total offense and a 22-7 edge in first downs.
Gage Eckelbarger recorded 1.5 tackles for loss, while Cole Swonguer, Beau Drake, TJ Minor and Sal Moyer also helped create problems behind the line of scrimmage. Cole Hysell added an interception with a 15-yard return as the Golden Eagles kept Coffman off the scoreboard until the final two minutes.
Now 2-0, Big Walnut will hit the road next Friday for a nonconference matchup at Reynoldsburg. It will be the Golden Eagles' final tune-up before turning their attention to OCC divisional play.
Through two weeks, Big Walnut has made its early-season message clear: the Golden Eagles can make plays on offense, control the line of scrimmage, and play suffocating defense.
