"When it comes to United States History, there is no topic I enjoy teaching about more than the Civil War. Students have been enjoying studying it too! In one class last week, we read a letter written by a Union soldier to his wife one week before dying in the battle of Bull Run. In it he tells her, “If it is necessary that I should fall on the battlefield for my country, I am ready. I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in, the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I know how strongly American civilization now leans upon the triumph of the government, and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and suffering of the Revolution. And I am willing, perfectly willing, to lay down all my joys in this life to help maintain this government, and to pay that debt.” In United States History, we have the privilege of studying many examples of men like this who were willing to lay down their lives for something they truly believed was sacred. Students are clearly moved by stories like this and in awe of the courage people can have in the face of danger and sacrifice. "Humanities Seminar is off to a good start. The course begins with some big questions. Why do we use language to communicate? What does it mean to speak well? Is there a difference between good speech and persuasive speech? We have been tackling these questions through our reading of Plato’s Gorgias. This is a challenging book. I told students on the first day that it often confuses me too. Maybe we can learn something from that fact too… Human language is powerful, but difficult to master. Whether we are speaking or listening, our careful attention is always required for success." - Mr. Bean, Humanities
