Thank you to the private donors from the Class of ’81 who worked with S.C. artist and fellow classmate Mike Williams to bring a beautiful new piece to WH’s Fine Arts hallway in the 300 Building. Sunset in the Flats 2 is a meaningful gift that will inspire present and future Baron artists, and we are honored to display it for our community. A prolific artist for more than three decades, Mike has created more than 4,000 works and has exhibited in galleries and museums across the country and internationally, including the S.C. State Museum, Columbia Museum of Art, and Volksbank in Kaiserslautern, Germany.

At the first High School Chapel of the year, Mr. Lee Gandy, Chapel Coordinator, challenged students to live out Wilson Hall’s vision that every student shall be known, loved, challenged, and safe. Using Scripture, he connected each part of the vision to valuing others, showing compassion and kindness, encouraging one another toward good deeds, and using words that build others up. He encouraged students to help strengthen the culture of Wilson Hall and leave the school a better place.

WH’s commitment to continuous professional development keeps our faculty and administrators learning so our students can continue to grow. Mrs. Susan Barfield, Director of Academics, and Mrs. Stacey Reaves, Assistant Head of School, attended the College Board’s Advanced Placement Annual Conference in Las Vegas, joining educators from across the country to explore new strategies, resources, and best practices for student success. WH offers 21 AP courses and has earned Platinum recognition on the AP School Honor Roll, an honor received by fewer than 5% of high schools nationwide.

Hunting high and low for Pete the Cat, Preschool 4 students turned their school day into a playful adventure filled with exploring, learning, and lots of fun. Searching for the beloved character from the popular book series, students made their way through art, library, music, and physical education, becoming more familiar with their co-curricular classes along the way. After plenty of searching and excitement, they finally spotted Pete hiding in a tree on their playground.

First Priority kicked off the year by giving middle school students an opportunity to grow in their faith and enjoy fellowship with one another. Guest speaker Billy Carlisle, pastor of Summerton Baptist Church, shared a message from Daniel 1:8 about unwavering faith and challenged students to live on mission, represent the Lord, and shine His light at WH and throughout the community. The Christian club, advised by Ms. Heather Eldridge, meets on alternating Tuesday mornings at 7:30, offering students another meaningful way to strengthen their faith together.

Shaping clay into pinch pot pumpkins, students in Mrs. Rachel Brown’s Ceramics class are building creativity while learning the fundamental techniques of working with clay. After forming and detailing their pieces, students will glaze their pumpkins before they are fired in the kiln. Experiences like these strengthen artistic skills and creative expression, an important part of a well-rounded liberal arts education.

Hanging in Founders Chapel, the cross created and gifted to WH by renowned sculptor Grainger McKoy carries a meaningful connection to faith and history. Crafted from reclaimed beams from the Church of the Holy Cross, its plaque notes that “since the early 1850s, this wood has been marinated in prayer” and inspired the cross’s simplicity and humility. A small wood-burned feather is the only mark of McKoy’s craftsmanship. As students and faculty gather in the chapel for worship, prayer, reflection, and fellowship, the cross serves as a quiet reminder of the faith that remains at the heart of the WH community.

Moving through the hallways in teams, 7th Grade Writing students put their knowledge of the parts of speech to the test with a collaborative scavenger hunt. The activity combined review with communication, teamwork, and problem-solving as students applied what they had learned in a fun, active way. The classes are taught by Mrs. Ashley Cook & Mrs. Alex Judson.

WH proudly congratulates Dr. Tina Crabbe Kennelly ’01, a recipient of the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award! Tina is a board-certified internal medicine physician and accomplished medical leader serving as Medical Director, Director of Primary Care, and Director of Research for Tryon Medical Partners in Charlotte, where she helps lead a nine-location practice of approximately 120 physicians and advanced practice clinicians. She also serves on the Clinical Governance Board and as Principal Investigator for multicenter clinical trials, having participated in more than 60 industry-sponsored studies. Tina earned her B.S. in biology from Clemson and M.D. from the USC School of Medicine, completing her internal medicine residency at MUSC, where she served as Chief Resident. Her honors include recognition as a Castle Connolly, Charlotte Magazine, and Business North Carolina Top Doctor, as well as Javara Investigator of the Year.

WH proudly congratulates Dr. James DuRant ’99, a recipient of the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award! James is the Regional Medical Director and founder of Novant Health Center for Pediatric Development and is triple board certified in pediatrics, developmental-behavioral pediatrics, and clinical informatics. He earned his B.S. in biology from UNC-Chapel Hill, M.B.A. from UNC-Pembroke, and M.D. from the USC School of Medicine, completing his pediatrics residency at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital and a fellowship at MUSC. James led the development and growth of Novant Health’s Center for Pediatric Development into a multi-site neurodevelopmental program serving children across multiple states and helped reduce wait times for developmental-behavioral evaluations from approximately 12 months to one month. His leadership in healthcare innovation, education, and advocacy has earned national recognition, including selection for Doximity’s inaugural Telehealth Fellowship and service on its Medical Advisory Board.
