Today was a very special day at Wilder Elementary that was focused completly on the love of reading. We were 1 of 50 recipents (one per state) to receive a special edition Dog Man Little Free Library courtesy of Little Free Library, Scholastic, and author Dav Pilkey. We also received 1,000 books to keep our new Little Free Library stocked!
To celebrate the opening of our brand new Little Free Library, we invited community leaders to join our school for the official unveiling. The Sumter Schools District Chief of Schools, the Mayor, members of the City Council and the South Carolina Association of School Librarians President were in attendance. We all took a turn speaking about the importance of libraries and reading. We had an official ribbon cutting and got to fill up our Free Little Library for the very first time. Each student then received their very own Dog Man goody bag that of course included a free copy of Dav Pilkey’s new book Dog Man: The Scarlet Shedder. It was a fantastic day that celebrated the Power of Reading!
We would like to thank Little Free Library, Scholastic, and author Dav Pilkey for their generation donation to our school and the local community of Sumter, South Carolina! We thank you for your support!
Up with Reading!

We made Love bracelets in the library this week after reading the story "All You Need Is Love and A Really Soft Pillow" by Peter H. Reynolds! Students made a list of the top 7 things they loved and then selected a bead to represent each person or thing. They did such a great job.

We are so grateful to Frank Baker for coming and sharing the story of the Goldberg family with our fifth graders today. Mr. Baker wrote a graphic novel based on the families experiences during the Holocaust. We would also like to thank the Goldberg family for donating a class set of this book to be used in the fifth grade classroom. It was a great day in the library!

This week in library we read the book "This Very Tree" which is the story of the 9/11 memorial tree in New York City. (This is one of the books on this year's South Carolina Picture Book Award Nominees list🥰.) After the story, students completed a story map about the book and then made their own replica of the Memorial Tree. It was a great lesson!

Summer School is wrapping up and I just wanted to share a few pictures of what we did in the library! Students spent the summer learning all about Africa. We learned about the people, the animals, the different countries, and we even learned how to play the ancient game from Africa called Mancala.
