The Summit & Westfield Collaborative brought together academic leaders from both districts today, Wednesday, August 19, for a day of shared knowledge and strategic growth. This peer networking event fostered new connections across the two Union County school districts.

The day opened with welcoming addresses from Scott Hough, Superintendent of Summit Public Schools, and Ray Gonzalez, Superintendent of Westfield Public Schools. The agenda featured a comprehensive Administrative Legal Training session, followed by a collaborative lunch and productive roundtable discussions focused on addressing current educational issues.

Day two of Summit Educator Training was packed with learning and community connection!

Our new educators dove into building security protocols, with a session expertly led by Summit High School Principal Stacy Grimaldi and Assistant Principal Brian Murtagh.

To help them get to know our town, the team embarked on a tour of Summit, guided by Jefferson Principal Dan Healy and Wilson and Jefferson Primary Centers Principal Evan Kozak. The tour included a special stop at the Summit Area YMCA.

Thanks to our PTOs for providing our new staff with gift cards to support our downtown Summit businesses.

The SHS Speech and Debate Team will hold its annual Speech and Debate Blast Off, Mon and Tues, Aug 24 & 25 from 9:30-3:00 at Summit High School. Students should meet in Room 228.

The two day workshop will introduce the various events to newcomers; work on all of the speech and debate events; polish communication skills; and explain the rules and expectations for team members.

Students may attend all or part of the workshop.

Summit Public Schools’ newest educators were welcomed to the district during the annual Summit Educator Training.

It was an opportunity to dive into district policies and procedures while getting to know the faces behind our schools. Superintendent Scott Hough and Human Resources Director Robert Gardella got things started with opening remarks.

Instructional Facilitator Amy Sweeney led a fun icebreaker, where everyone shared their own "stats"—from years of experience and degrees earned to the miles traveled this summer.

Our new team members also received a warm community welcome from local leaders, including Mayor Elizabeth Fagan, Board of Education President Eileen Kelly, and Summit Public Library Head of Youth Services Ann-Marie Aymer.

This week there will be several training sessions and a tour of Summit, thanks to the coordination by Human Resources Assistant Valerie Bampe.

Welcome to these talented educators joining us and can't wait to see the impact they'll have on our students!

Summit High School Mathematics teacher Angelique Bender recently traveled to the Philippines to lead a special seminar called "Add Color to Your Teaching in Math."

In partnership with the DepEd Schools Division of Zamboanga Sibugay and the provincial government, Ms. Bender, who was born and grew up in the Philippines, shared her strategies for making math more engaging, enjoyable, and accessible with 49 local teachers and local Governor Ann K. Hofer. Her presentation about using colors to help students visualize and understand complex mathematical concepts—was designed to help to bring math to life in classrooms far beyond our own.

We are so excited to share that Lincoln-Hubbard Elementary School’s own Grace Erwin has received an Honorable Mention in Congressman Tom Kean, Jr.’s essay contest!

The contest invited students from New Jersey’s Seventh Congressional District to reflect on the theme "America’s Story Begins at Home" by exploring how their local hometowns have shaped our nation’s history.

With only seven honorable mentions awarded across all 3rd and 4th graders, this is a truly impressive achievement. Congratulations, Grace!

SEF is pleased to honor Meghan Arts-Scozzari, Sculpture and Ceramics teacher at Summit High School, as the 2026 recipient of SEF’s Nora Radest Award for Excellence in Education.

The award recognizes a Summit teacher or administrator who has submitted grants through the SEF process and, in doing so, has enriched the classroom environment and served as a role model to others in the district.

Meghan has used SEF grants to strengthen the ceramics program at Summit High School, supporting hands-on learning opportunities such as Raku workshops, improved kiln equipment, and professional-level tools for students.

Big congratulations to our Summit High School Speech and Debate team for their impressive showing at the National Speech and Debate Association's National Tournament in Richmond, Virginia!

Six of our students competed alongside 7,000 peers from 1,500 schools across the nation. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and success on such a large stage:

Amelia Jorek: Advanced to the Octo-final round in Program Oral Interpretation, placing in the top 60 in the country.

Reid Whitley: Advanced to Double Octos in Storytelling.

Georgie Stevenson: Advanced to Double Octos in Expository Speaking.

Owen Siegel: Advanced to Octos in Expository Speaking.

Beyond the competition, the students enjoyed team-building moments, including a tour of the American Civil Rights Museum and the annual Team New Jersey social.

The momentum continues—their 2026-27 season kicks off in August with the Novice Debate Camp, Perfect Performance Speech camp, and the Speech and Debate Team Blast-off!
